H2-View News: Metso opens hydrogen iron ore pre-reduction pilot in Frankfurt

The Finnish-headquartered industrial firm said the plant, based on its Circored technology, can continuously pre-reduce iron using hydrogen as the sole reducing agent. Pre-reduction partially removes oxygen from iron ore. This stops the process at an intermediate oxide stage before final smelting or reduction. In Metso’s Circored process, iron ore fines are fluidised, then exposed to high-temperature hydrogen gas to strip away oxygen. The plant integrates pre-heating, reduction, gas cleaning, and hydrogen/dust recirculation systems. Electric heaters are also used in the process. In the future, the system could be linked with Metso’s DRI smelting furnace to support cleaner steelmaking. The [...]

H2-View News: Western Australia opens A$60m funding round for clean energy projects

Through WA’s New Energies Industries Funding Stream, support will be provided under the Investment Attraction Fund (IAF). The government will accept applications from companies focused on developing green hydrogen, green iron and steel, critical mineral processing, and carbon capture, utilisation and storage (CCUS) projects. In its first round in 2024, the IAF awarded AUD 60m to five projects. These included decarbonised steel manufacturing, converting critical minerals into battery precursors, developing battery materials, and carbon capture ventures. “One of my government’s key priorities is diversifying the WA economy so that it remains the strongest in the nation,” said WA Premier, Roger [...]

H2-View News: Plug Power enters Brazilian market through GH2 Global partnership

Under the partnership, Plug will supply its GenDrive fuel cells to replace battery and fossil fuel use in forklifts, distribution centres and industrial hubs. The Brazilian infrastructure firm GH2 will handle local project integration, permitting and rollout of Plug technologies. The initial focus of the collaboration will be on large logistics and industrial poles, with expansion to other strategic regions of Brazil planned down the line. In its latest earnings report, Plug Power signalled growth ambitions in material handling as it works to cut costs and reach margin neutrality by Q4 2025. Plug CEO Andy Marsh said partnering with GH2 [...]

H2-View News: Pertamina Geothermal breaks ground on green hydrogen pilot

The state-backed company plans to use anion exchange membrane (AEM) electrolysis technology with efficiencies of 82-88% to produce green hydrogen. PGE has not disclosed either the chosen electrolyser supplier or the expected commissioning date. Using geothermal energy to produce green hydrogen provides a flexible offtake for its baseload electricity, creating value beyond traditional power sales. Julfi Hadi, the company’s President Director, confirmed plans to generate green ammonia and green methanol too, opening up new revenue streams beyond selling power to the grid. “Through this step, PGE emphasises business transformation towards beyond electricity and beyond business, making geothermal the foundation of [...]

H2-View News: Daimler begins testing Setra hydrogen fuel cell coach

The 13.9-metre H2 Coach is slated to have a range of at least 800km from 46kg of hydrogen stored in two tanks and a 300kW fuel cell unit from Daimler’s joint venture with Volvo, Cellcentric. Based on the existing battery-electric S 517 HD coach, the fuel cell will drive the central electric motor to offer up to 400kW of output, with a battery pack serving as temporary energy storage to support the fuel cell under high loads. The test drives come ahead of plans for series production of the fuel cell vehicle. Daimler has not disclosed a planned start date. [...]

H2-View News: Haffner Energy and Luxaviation strike 15-year hydrogen-based SAF deal

Luxembourg-based Luxaviation, one of the world’s largest operators, plans to blend SAF into its fuel supply to cut lifecycle CO₂ emissions, respond to client demand for lower-carbon travel, and comply with upcoming EU mandates. Under the Europe ReFuelEU Aviation legislation, aircraft fuel suppliers must ensure a 2% SAF blend, which will incrementally increase to a 70% share by 2050. In 2023, Luvaviation launched its Go-to-Zero investment fund to foster SAF production and use. The Haffner deal builds on that strategy by locking in long-term supply under fixed terms. However, exact volumes remain undisclosed. “For Luxaviation, securing long-term SAF supply is [...]

H2-View News: India launches first port-based green hydrogen project at VOC

Worth $52.3m, the facility is expected to produce around eight tonnes of hydrogen per day. The green fuel will be used to power the port streetlights and an electric vehicle charging station. The project will support India’s first domestic green shipping corridor between Kandla and Tuticorin, led by fleet and port operators, including V.O. Chidambaranar Port. It’s slated to be launched in late 2025. Plans were also announced for a 750-metre green hydrogen-based methanol bunkering and refuelling pilot project at the port. “The projects launched today will generate thousands of jobs, attract global investments and position Tamil Nadu as a [...]

H2-View News: MPs press Energy Minister to support UK hydrogen supply chains

New Energy Minister Michael Shanks faced questions from cross-party MPs on Tuesday (9 September), with warnings that the UK could fall behind international competitors without swift policy clarity. Led by Labour MP Tom Collins, a former hydrogen heating specialist at Bosch, called for the government to be “agile” and work in partnership with industry to “cut through the administration and bureaucracy” to deliver a clear vision. Several MPs pointed to the scale of the economic prize. Figures cited in the debate suggest hydrogen already contributes £8.4bn ($11.4bn) to the UK economy but could add £18bn ($24.4bn) and 60,000 jobs by [...]

H2-View News: Advent advances Airbus hydrogen project with redesigned MEA tech

By reconfiguring the MEA design and introducing targeted hardware tweaks, the fuel cell technology company achieved higher power density and improved its fuel cell system efficiency. The gains ensure the fuel cell engines can be cooled with smaller radiators to reduce both weight and drag on an aircraft. Therefore, this supports more efficient hydrogen-electric propulsion. Beyond aviation, Advent sees the redesigned MEAs as a stepping stone toward applications in defence, heavy-duty mobility and off-grid power generation. H2 View understands that Airbus validated the redesign and performance work as a project milestone. The milestone allows the joint project to move toward [...]
