Two of Oman’s flagship green hydrogen projects have been quietly dropped after a market reassessment, dealing a setback to one of the sector’s most closely watched development programmes. In a filing by Oman News Agency, Hydrom Managing Director Abdulaziz Al Shidhani told the 2025 Green Hydrogen Summit Oman that only seven of the nine original projects that won land tenders were progressing. It comes after the conclusion of a two-month consultation which sought views on how legislation could be adapted to underpin the development of dedicated hydrogen transmission infrastructure. The moves are intended to give clarity to investors, set basic market rules, and ensure early networks operate safely and efficiently. Emergency services responded to a hydrogen bus fire in the south of the UK on Tuesday (2 December). West Sussex Fire and Rescue Service said it was attending to an “incident” near a shopping centre in Crawley at around 12:30pm. Images and videos posted on social media show the roof of a blue single-decker bus on fire at the side of the road. Typically, both the hydrogen storage tanks and fuel cells are installed on the roof of buses. A spokesperson for the fire service said three fire engines and an aerial ladder responded to the fire. Set to be awarded through the Auction-as-a-Service (AaaS) mechanism, the funds will be directed to green hydrogen production and use projects. €278.6m ($325m) will be directed towards production for any sector, while €136.4m ($159m) will be aimed at projects supplying maritime and aviation. Like the EU’s bloc-wide European Hydrogen Bank auctions, the AaaS scheme will provide a fixed premium per kilogramme of RFNBO green hydrogen for up to 10 years, once projects enter operations. Jackow joins Hyundai Motor Group Vice-Chair Jaehoon Chang in the position, at what the Council called a “defining moment” for the hydrogen sector. With more projects heading toward construction, alongside a consolidation of developments and companies, the Council said its leadership will focus on priorities including demand, infrastructure and standards. Air Liquide was one of 13 founding members of the Council in 2017 and has been increasing its clean hydrogen project developments alongside its traditional industrial gas business. Under a memorandum of understanding (MOU), the trio will use Hyundai’s PEM fuel cells – typically used in its road vehicles – as a base for the systems. Shipbuilder HD KSOE intends to integrate the fuel cell technology with hydrogen dual-fuel engines to deliver a hybrid electrified propulsion system for mid- to large-scale liquefied hydrogen carriers.
