H2-View News: UKEn signs hydrogen storage and import agreements with Portland Port

The UK Oil and Gas (UKOG) subsidiary agreed to two Memorandums of Understanding (MOU) with the port, and it intends to formalise these agreements in due course. One MOU will cover the import of green hydrogen in carrier liquids of compressed form for storage, while the other will explore green hydrogen production with PPL, using excess local renewable energy to create a “Hydrogen Battery” for energy storage. Additionally, they want to utilise hydrogen to power generation within Portland Port, which would meet initial power requirements for UKEn’s South Dorsent salt cavern storage site and its environs. An online statement released [...]

H2-View News: Port of Newcastle taps MHI for NSW hydrogen export hub studies

The Clean Energy Precinct (CEP) project plans to see a 220-hectare area of industrial wasteland on Kooragang Island near the New South Wales (NSW) port developed into a clean hydrogen hub. Front-end engineering and design (FEED) studies are already underway – backed by an AUD $100m government grant – which MHI will now support following the signing of a formal advisory agreement. It builds off a 2023 Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between the pair. The studies cover electrical infrastructure, water services, general infrastructure, storage, berth infrastructure, and pipelines to berth. With MHI having established its Takasago Hydrogen Park in Japan [...]

H2-View News: Supercritical secures financial backing for ‘ultra-efficient’ membraneless electrolyser tech

Supercritical will use the funding from the likes of Anglo American, Black Finch and more to advance its electrolysers to the pilot stage while refines technology, manufacturing and market expansion. The UK-based firm said that its “ultra-efficient membraneless electrolyser delivers hydrogen at pressures exceeding 220 bar with over 99% hydrogen purity.” Membraneless electrolysers operate without a physical membrane, using fluid dynamics or buoyancy to separate gases naturally. This simpler, cost-effective design offers advantages in durability and maintenance but poses challenges around gas purity and scaling. Supercritical has also now launched its waiting list, having already secured several key commercial commitments. [...]

H2-View News: Utility produces hydrogen from steel plant off-gas in North American deployment

The company’s H2Gen system started production at a “major steel plant in North America” in November 2023 and operated for over 3,000 hours, using blast furnace off-gas to produce hydrogen. It is based on Utility’s electroless coupled exchange reduction oxidation (eXERO) platform and converts steam and off-gas into hydrogen and “enriched CO2” through an electrochemical process without external electrical inputs. Furthermore, the company says the system can switch from producing to standby and back to producing within 20 minutes to ensure flexibility with operations. The firm claims the technology offers a low-cost, feedstock-versatile and modular solution for hydrogen production. However, [...]

H2-View News: Graphitic Energy commissions Texas pilot turquoise hydrogen and graphene plant

The firm’s new plant at the Southwest Research Institute (SWRI) in San Antonio is expected to convert natural gas into hydrogen and graphene through the end of 2025. Capable of producing “several hundred” kilogrammes of hydrogen and up to 1,000kg of graphene per day during 24/7 operations, the pilot plant will inform Graphitic’s commercial plant designs. Methane pyrolysis breaks down methane into hydrogen and carbon at high temperatures in the absence of oxygen. © Graphitic Energy The firm’s process operates at less than 800ºC and uses a fluidised bed to improve heat transfer and limit the size of the reactor. H2-View News: Market slowdown puts pressure on electrolyser firms, but ‘complete solutions are key’: H2 View webinar

Electrolyser manufacturers are expected to remain unprofitable and face bankruptcy risks through 2030, largely due to their product-only business model, a H2 View webinar has heard. Deepak Bawa, CEO at US-based electrolyser and engineering company Splitwaters, told viewers that electrolyser suppliers could provide complete solutions to a client, rather than just the electrolyser product. H2-View News: HyTerra to drill first natural hydrogen wells in Kansas next month

The Australian start-up will kick off the campaign under its Nemaha Project, where previous reports indicated hydrogen concentrations of 92% and up to 3% helium. Under its stage I exploration programme, the company will drill two back-to-back wells in April 2025 with the option to drill a third. © HyTerra This marks the start of HyTerra’s 12-month exploration plan, focused on geological surveys and data collection. The drilling programme aims to assess subsurface hydrogen and helium concentrations while analysing the reservoir’s characteristics. “This drilling campaign marks a major milestone for HyTerra as we leverage our significant lease position through a [...]

H2-View News: Europe approves hydrogen funding for Austria and Lithuania

The approved schemes, under the European Hydrogen Bank’s auction, will support electrolyser companies to produce up to 112,000 tonnes of renewable hydrogen in Austria and 13,000 tonnes in Lithuania. The schemes will contribute to the objectives of the recent Clean Industrial Deal to accelerate the decarbonisation of EU industry while strengthening competitiveness, of the REPowerEU Plan to reduce dependence on Russian fossil fuels and be greener, as well as the EU Hydrogen Strategy. The moves will help both countries achieve their national hydrogen objectives, as well as supporting targets for the share of renewable fuels of non-biological origin (RFNBOs) consumed in transport and in industry that [...]

H2-View News: Green Hydrogen Systems faces insolvency as funding efforts collapse

The company revealed on Sunday (March 9) that it would file for in-court restructuring on Monday (March 10) to assess survival options, including asset sales. Green Hydrogen Systems has struggled to stay afloat since last October, when it launched a drastic restructuring plan to slash costs by up to 50%. The company warned that it could exhaust its cash reserves by H1 2025, estimating restructuring costs at up to DKK 230m ($33.5m) and planning a rights issue of DKK 300m ($43.7m). Company Chairman, Thomas Broe-Andersen, said that while the company had been executing the restructuring plan, “it has not been [...]
