H2-View News: DNV and ABS grant AiP to Pherousa for ammonia-cracking carrier vessel

Maritime classification societies DNV and American Bureau of Shipping (ABS) each awarded an AiP, indicating that the design meets the necessary technical standards and safety requirements. This approval enables Pherousa to advance the development and construction of its ammonia-powered Ultramax carrier vessels. The ships will feature an onboard ammonia cracker, allowing them to convert ammonia into hydrogen, which will then be used as fuel. Pherousa holds an exclusive license to its shareholder Metacon’s ammonia cracking HIWAR concept technology. The technology is versatile and can be integrated with various hydrogen applications, including PEM fuel cells, hydrogen internal combustion engines (ICE), and auxiliary engines. [...]

H2-View News: Just 24% of 2030 clean hydrogen demand will materialise with current policies: report

Developed with McKinsey, the report estimates that 75% of 2030 clean hydrogen demand will come from established use cases like refining and ammonia production, while new applications face tough cost and infrastructure barriers. The report categorises 34 million tonnes per annum (mtpa) of potential hydrogen demand in 2030 across the EU, the US and East Asia. Just 8 mtpa expected to be met by existing policies like the EU’s Renewable Energy Directive (RED III), Japan’s Contracts for Difference (CfD) programme, and the US Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) – if implemented. But even in these policy-backed sectors, some uses may struggle [...]

H2-View News: Keyou and Komatsu begin proof-of-concept tests for ‘world’s first’ hydrogen-powered dump truck

Together, the Munich, Germany-based hydrogen technology firm and the Japanese construction equipment manufacturer are now conducting proof-of-concept tests at the latter’s Ibaraki plant. The hydrogen-powered truck features a 700 bar tank system provided by Argo-Anleg, which is mounted beside the cab for maximum storage capacity. The proof-of-concept tests will evaluate the vehicle’s driving performance, continuous operating hours and fuel efficiency. The project builds on a six-year partnership between the two companies. They began working on the hydrogen-powered dump truck in 2023, and the first firing on the engine was achieved a year later at Keyou partner, KST in Bad Dürkheim, [...]

H2-View News: Decarbonisation tech “highly inflationary” warns BlackRock CEO

The current cost of decarbonising technologies is still high, and therefore highly inflationary, according to Larry Fink, CEO and Chairman of BlackRock, the US multinational investment company that manages over a $1 trillion in sustainable investments. Speaking at the energy conference CERAWeek by S&P Global in Houston, he said energy gave Europe a “wake-up call” and is now calling for more pragmatism around green investments. “Everyone talks about the opportunity with hydrogen – we can have blue and green hydrogen but is anyone willing to pay the cost?” he said. “We have to be working side by side in trying [...]

H2-View News: UKEn signs hydrogen storage and import agreements with Portland Port

The UK Oil and Gas (UKOG) subsidiary agreed to two Memorandums of Understanding (MOU) with the port, and it intends to formalise these agreements in due course. One MOU will cover the import of green hydrogen in carrier liquids of compressed form for storage, while the other will explore green hydrogen production with PPL, using excess local renewable energy to create a “Hydrogen Battery” for energy storage. Additionally, they want to utilise hydrogen to power generation within Portland Port, which would meet initial power requirements for UKEn’s South Dorsent salt cavern storage site and its environs. An online statement released [...]

H2-View News: Port of Newcastle taps MHI for NSW hydrogen export hub studies

The Clean Energy Precinct (CEP) project plans to see a 220-hectare area of industrial wasteland on Kooragang Island near the New South Wales (NSW) port developed into a clean hydrogen hub. Front-end engineering and design (FEED) studies are already underway – backed by an AUD $100m government grant – which MHI will now support following the signing of a formal advisory agreement. It builds off a 2023 Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between the pair. The studies cover electrical infrastructure, water services, general infrastructure, storage, berth infrastructure, and pipelines to berth. With MHI having established its Takasago Hydrogen Park in Japan [...]
