H2-View News: Europe targets South Africa green hydrogen in clean energy investment package
South Africa becomes the first country to sign such an agreement with Europe. It will focus on investment, the clean energy transition, skills, technology, and developing strategic industries along the entire supply chains. The energy funding would come from European financial institutions. The overall package totals €4.7bn which includes €303m in EU grants. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said it has started negotiations on the first Clean Trade and Investment Partnership. Trade between South Africa and EU totals €50bn today. “Take the clean hydrogen value chain,” she said. “South Africa has everything to become a global leader: You [...]
H2-View News: Charbone and ABB to develop 15 green hydrogen sites across North America
Under a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU), the two energy companies have said they will jointly develop the projects over the next five years. Acting as a blueprint, the flagship Sorel-Tracy facility will be connected to the Hydro-Québec grid by the end of Q2 2025, using hydroelectricity to power two electrolysers. In Phase 1 of the Sorel-Tracy project, Charbone expects to produce approximately 400kg of hydrogen. While details are thin and the size of future projects hasn’t been confirmed, they could follow a similar scale. In addition to the Québec plant, the company will launch a production facility in the greater [...]
H2-View News: Plug lands hydrogen forklift and refuelling station deal in Texas
Under the deal, Georgia-headquartered Southwire will deploy the Plug fuel cell-powered forklifts at its Dallas-Fort Worth facility, using hydrogen produced by one of Plug’s production sites in Georgia, Tennessee or Louisiana. The US hydrogen firm will also provide onsite fuel cell servicing for an initial five-year period and maintain the refuelling station for 10 years. By using the hydrogen forklifts, the companies say Southwire could “displace” over 450 tonnes of CO2 per year. It comes after Plug announced it would refocus on its core material handling and electrolyser businesses as it looks to overcome tough financial challenges. The company has [...]
H2-View News: Ballard revenues drop 32% despite record hydrogen fuel cell shipments
The Canadian firm’s revenues fell by 20% across its heavy-duty mobility segment, with rail seeing the biggest loss of 86%. This was followed by Trucks at 66% and marine losing 61%. Buses, however, saw a significant increase of 51% to $44.2m over the year. The company’s stationary and emerging markets were also hit with 41% and 74% falls respectively. That’s despite Ballard shipping “record” fuel cell engines in 2024, representing 56MW of power – almost 30% up on 2023. It also now sits on a “record” order backlog of $173.5m, thanks to $98.9m of orders in 2024. Its power products [...]
H2-View News: Matmut and Inocel partner to install hydrogen generator at Rouen HQ
The French company wants to commit to cleaner energy as part of its ‘Objective: Impact!’ Strategy. However, Matmut is not only installing the hydrogen generator as part of its decarbonisation strategy but is also actively supporting fuel cell supplier Inocel’s development. Beyond investment, Matmut employees will join Inocel’s working groups to share expertise, helping the company better understand regulatory and technical challenges and improve its hydrogen generator solutions. Nicolas Gomart, Vice-President and CEO of Matmut Group, claimed the firm will always be connected to key players “in the real economy,” including startups, micro-enterprises and SMEs. Gomart added, “Energy sovereignty, both [...]

H2-View News: BAM Construction trials JCB’s hydrogen ICE-powered Loadall
The 540-I80H Loadall is powered by JCB’s hydrogen ICE, which was was approved for commercial use in machines by 11 licensing authorities across Europe in January 2025. Deployed at a factory regeneration project in Birmingham, the loadall is being refuelled by hydrogen delivered by JCB in a mobile unit. “We’re starting to explore the use of hydrogen as an alternative fuel,” explained Colin Evison, BAM’s Innovation Technical Lead. “It was important to get the hydrogen fuel machine on a real construction site. We’ve seen it in test environments, and we know that technically it does work, but putting it to [...]
H2-View News: European Energy produces first green molecules of e-methanol at Kassø facility
The company began producing green hydrogen in January 2025, and they have now combined that with biogenic CO2 sourced locally from the biogas facility in Tønder. The Kassø plant, which is said to be the “world’s first and largest commercial’ e-methanol facility,” will now be ramped up during the second quarter of 2025. European Energy aims to produce 42,000 tonnes of e-methanol per year. The hydrogen plant has been equipped with three electrolysers provided by Siemens Energy, offering a combined capacity of 52.5MW. European Energy itself developed the methanol loop. “This is a pivotal moment on the journey that started [...]
H2-View News: Germany pressured to remove tax hurdles for hydrogen ICEs
Under the EU energy tax directive, hydrogen is currently treated differently as a road fuel based on its use. Hydrogen fuel cells are exempt from energy tax, while hydrogen engines are currently charged €0.9/kg ($0.98/kg), which will rise to €1.25/kg ($1.36/kg) in 2027. In a letter to the German Government, companies including Daimler Truck, Volvo, TEAL Mobility and Bosch, have called for the exemptions to be granted to hydrogen ICE vehicles. They argue that the tax disparity distorts competition and hinders hydrogen ICE development, claiming that many hydrogen refuelling stations refuse to serve engine-powered vehicles due to the tax uncertainties. [...]
H2-View News: Gascade begins filling German hydrogen pipeline project Flow
The Flow project, a 1,630km pipeline set to become part of Germany’s hydrogen core network, will repurpose a 1.4-metre-diameter former natural gas pipeline for hydrogen transport. © Gascade When fully operational, Gascade’s pipeline is said to have a capacity of up to 20GW. It will be able to transport energy produced offshore and onshore in Northern Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania to Southern Germany. “With this conversion, Gascade is not only demonstrating its technological expertise and innovative know-how but also sending a strong signal for the hydrogen economy,” Gascade’s Managing Director, Christoph von dem Bussche, said. “We are proud to be starting the [...]
