H2-View News: Green Cat Hydrogen plans 4,000 tonne hydrogen facility at Chapelcross

Subject to planning approval, the facility will be located at the Chapelcross Energy Transition Zone near Creca. Work is underway on the preliminary engineering and environmental studies for the project. The produced hydrogen is expected to decarbonise numerous industries in the region, including food and drink producers, other manufacturers and public sector operations. The facility will also be connected to new-build solar assets for renewable generation. Last year, the UK Government unveiled plans to convert the former nuclear site at Chapelcross to a green energy hub. GCH’s project will be located adjacent to the site. Before GCH submits a planning [...]

H2-View News: Alternative fuels ship regs not likely before 2028 ‘at earliest’

It notes progress has been made with the completion of interim guidelines for hydrogen-fuelled ships planned for 2025, and formal approval and publication next year. But it anticipates another two years before regulations under the IGF Code are approved. Shipping operators are forcing the pace. While no commercial vessels are operating on ammonia, the first orders for ammonia dual-fuel engines have been signed, with delivery from this year onwards. The Fortescue Green Pioneer completed ammonia fuel trials in May last year. Ferry operator Torghatten is set to receive two 120m ferries powered by compressed hydrogen in 2025 and liquid hydrogen [...]

H2-View News: Australian Government injects AUD $750m into green metals, backing hydrogen-based production

Part of the AUD $1.7bn Future Made in Australia (FMIA) Innovation Fund , the government will provide grants to support the development of new technologies, pilot and demonstration projects, and revitalising plant and equipment. Up to AUD $500m ($313m) has already been awarded through FMIA for clean energy technology manufacturing, while AUD $250m ($158m) has gone towards low-carbon liquid fuels. AUD $200m ($126m) is yet to be allocated. “Jobs up and emissions down, that’s our goal and investing in our world-class Australian made metals know-how is helping make that happen,” explained Ed Husic, Minister for Industry and Science. “Demand for [...]

H2-View News: Hystar lands second electrolyser deal in South Korea with Sunbo Unitech

While details on the initiative are thin, Hystar’s press release explains that the stacks will be integrated into the company’s balance of plant system, and, after final commissioning, the system will be handed over to KOMIPO’s Shin Boryeong power station. The hydrogen produced will be used to refuel fuel cell electric vehicles (FCEVs), including buses, to support a transition to sustainable transport in the region. “We are excited to close another contract in South Korea,” Fredrik Mowill, CEO of Hystar, said. “We look forward to working with Sunbo to successfully deploy Hystar electrolyser stacks in their Boryeong project.” H2 View [...]

H2-View News: Gasunie and Petrogas explore North Sea pipeline reuse for hydrogen transport

Gasunie, in collaboration with the Dutch Ministry of Climate and Green Growth, is assessing the technical, legal, economic and environmental feasibility of repurposing offshore pipelines for hydrogen transport, while Petrogas will explore options to reuse its existing infrastructure. They will focus on the feasibility of reuse and repurposing of a natural gas pipeline, which could be connected to the offshore hydrogen project Demo 1, a 20-50MW initiative backed by the Dutch Government. Demo 1 aims to support the Netherlands’ offshore wind expansion by converting excess wind energy into hydrogen at sea, to reduce reliance on power cables and lower infrastructure [...]

H2-View News: Port of Leith demonstrates green hydrogen shore power for docked tugboats

The UK Government-backed project integrates water treatment, waste heat utilisation and hydrogen production to power large tugboats operated by Targe Towing. However, the vessels will only use the hydrogen for shore power while tied up at the port, replacing the need for diesel auxiliary engines. Effluent from a nearby wastewater treatment plant is processed using Waterhelm’s technology to produce reusable water. The water undergoes electrolysis via Logan Energy’s systems to generate green hydrogen. Part of the Clean Maritime Demonstration Competition Round 4 (CMDC4), the project is funded by the Department for Transport (DfT) and delivered by Innovate UK. They worked [...]

H2-View News: CIC secures Net Zero shipping deal for Australian hydrogen exports

The Singapore and Hong Kong-headquartered marine company, which operates one of the world’s largest vessel fleets, will ship green hydrogen from CIC’s Australian initiatives. On its website, Purus Marine claimed it’s at the “forefront of decarbonising the maritime sector, deploying a range of technologies such as clean fuels, energy-saving devices, electrification and carbon capture systems.” CIC co-founder, David Green claimed the agreement with Purus Marine is critical in creating a hydrogen product “that truly met the ambitions of energy and derivatives customers.” Green added, “Demand for renewable hydrogen is powered by a desire for zero-carbon fuels, but traditional products by [...]

H2-View News: Ricardo taps Ryze for hydrogen supply to support fuel cell testing

The Shoreham facility is focused on developing hydrogen, alternative fuels and electrified transport engineering, serving industries such as off-highway, commercial vehicles, marine and aerospace. Tim Bassett, Head of Test at Ricardo, said he’s delighted to see a “regular supply” of green hydrogen to the UK site, which expanded its capabilities last May by supporting marine customers with the design, development and testing of propulsion systems. He said, “Having recently doubled our hydrogen test capacity for fuel cell and sustainably fuelled hydrogen combustion engines, having a reliable supplier to support our activities is crucial. “This will help us to deliver key [...]

H2-View News: Europe targets South Africa green hydrogen in clean energy investment package

South Africa becomes the first country to sign such an agreement with Europe. It will focus on investment, the clean energy transition, skills, technology, and developing strategic industries along the entire supply chains. The energy funding would come from European financial institutions. The overall package totals €4.7bn which includes €303m in EU grants. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said it has started negotiations on the first Clean Trade and Investment Partnership. Trade between South Africa and EU totals €50bn today. “Take the clean hydrogen value chain,” she said. “South Africa has everything to become a global leader: You [...]

H2-View News: Charbone and ABB to develop 15 green hydrogen sites across North America

Under a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU), the two energy companies have said they will jointly develop the projects over the next five years. Acting as a blueprint, the flagship Sorel-Tracy facility will be connected to the Hydro-Québec grid by the end of Q2 2025, using hydroelectricity to power two electrolysers. In Phase 1 of the Sorel-Tracy project, Charbone expects to produce approximately 400kg of hydrogen. While details are thin and the size of future projects hasn’t been confirmed, they could follow a similar scale. In addition to the Québec plant, the company will launch a production facility in the greater [...]
