H2-View News: Vale-GEP hydrogen Mega Hub recognised as a flagship EU initiative

As part of this initiative, they will develop a hydrogen production unit to supply clean hydrogen for HBI production at the Vale-GEP Mega Hub. The project was first selected as part of the EU’s €300bn ($328bn) Global Gateway Programme in the Climate and Energy Category last December, and now it has been recognised as a flagship project. Bart Biebuyck, CEO of GEP, called the Global Gateway tool a “win-win situation for Europe and partner countries like Brazil.” After the project was endorsed by Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission, Marian Schuegraf, Ambassador to the Delegation of the [...]

H2-View News: Beyond Aero unveils battery-free hydrogen jet concept with 2.4MW fuel cell

Since unveiling the initial concept in 2023, the French aviator has refined the BYA-1 with a clean-sheet design optimised for gaseous hydrogen, to enhance safety, efficiency and certification readiness. The updated concept integrates 700-bar fuel tanks above the wing box to “improve crashworthiness,” eliminating high-pressure fuel lines in the pressurised cabin. Unlike most hydrogen-electric systems that rely on batteries to handle power surges, Beyond Aero’s battery-free fuel cell system is designed to provide constant power, eliminating the need for a hybrid setup. Traditional fuel cells struggle with varying power demands, requiring batteries for peak loads, regenerative braking, and cold starts. [...]

H2-View News: BASF starts up 54MW electrolyser to replace 8,000 tonnes of grey hydrogen

Hydrogen produced by the Siemens Energy PEM electrolyser will be fed into the facility’s Verbund network and distributed across its various chemicals production plants. H2 View understands BASF plans to supply some of the system’s output for use in mobility applications in the Rhine-Neckar metropolitan region. It comes under the Hy4Chem project, which was supported by €124.3m in funding from the Important Project of Common European Interest (IPCEI) scheme. The new system marks the first time that electrolytic hydrogen has been produced at the Ludwigshafen site, which has previously produced it through steam methane reforming or by-products. “The new electrolyser [...]

H2-View News: Sungrow inks electrolyser deal for China’s $680m hydrogen-based e-methanol plant

The electrolyser-making subsidiary of Sungrow said it would deliver 16 alkaline electrolyser units to state-owned China Coal Ordos Energy Chemical’s 100,000-tonne Liquid Sunshine demonstration project. The $680m project, which is already under construction, plans to combine green hydrogen and CO2 captured from a coal-powered chemical plant’s operations to produce e-methanol. Sungrow will also supply integrated gas-liquid separation and purification systems for the plant. Once complete, developers expect to have installed 625MW of wind and solar capacity and reduce a total of 500,000 tonnes of CO2 per year. It is expected to be put into operation in October next year. E-methanol [...]

H2-View News: Mote Hydrogen raises $7m to scale biomass-to-hydrogen production processes

Mote focuses on biomass carbon removal and storage (BiCRS), converting wood waste into hydrogen while permanently capturing CO2. In an online statement, Mote described it as a “scalable solution that simultaneously strengthens domestic energy independence and supports forestry and land management.” Reportedly, the company’s patented technology improves hydrogen yield and efficiencies while also supporting wildlife prevention and sustainable forestry management. According to Mote’s website, it aims to capture 450,000 tonnes of CO2 per year and produce 60,000kg of hydrogen daily. Furthermore, the US Department of Energy (DOE) estimates that up to 1.5 billion dry tonnes of biomass are available annually [...]

H2-View News: Activists demand halt to Africa-EU hydrogen pipeline over resource exploitation fears

The €13bn ($14.2bn) 3,300km SoutH2 corridor pipeline plans to connect Tunisia and Algeria with Germany, Austria and Italy, to secure volumes of green hydrogen to meet Europe’s RePowerEU goal of importing 10 million tonnes per year by 2030. The plans, led by transmission systems operators (TSOs) Snam, TAG and Gas Connect Austria were endorsed by African and European politicians in January. However, the coalition, led by the campaign group Corporate Europe Observatory, claims the development could amount to neo-colonialism, which places the burden of Europe’s decarbonisation on the Global South. “It exploits African land, water and labour to feed Europe’s [...]

H2-View News: Singapore researchers convert sewage sludge into hydrogen and animal feed

Researchers at the Nanyang Technological University (NTU), Singapore, created a three-step process powered by solar electricity using mechanical, chemical and biological techniques to challenge conventional technologies like anaerobic digestion (AD). Sewage sludge is a semi-solid by-product of wastewater treatment, consisting of organic and inorganic materials, microorganisms, heavy metals and other contaminants. The NTU process begins by breaking down the sewage sludge. A chemical treatment then separates heavy metals from organic materials. Using a solar-powered electrochemical process, the researchers use electrodes to transform the organic materials into products like acetic acid – which is used for food production – and hydrogen [...]

H2-View News: CKPC rolls out first hydrogen-powered locomotive for mainline service

Operating out of Golden, British Columbia, the retrofitted AC4400CW locomotive is carrying coal mined by Elk Valley Resources. Last October, the company completed a test run of the application between Golden and Elk Valley Resources’ Sparwood mine. CPKC’s CP1201 locomotive completed its first refuelling on March 6 at the new fixed locomotive fuelling station, which is reportedly the first to be placed in service outside of Alberta on CPKC’s network. Last November, the company completed the construction of two hydrogen production and refuelling facilities in Calgary and Edmonton to support its hydrogen-powered locomotive network. In a post on social media, [...]

H2-View News: UK-backed trial to produce hydrogen from seawater to fuel harbour vessel

The HydroPort trials at Portland Port in Dorset will allow newly launched start-up Latent Drive to assess the market potential of its SeaStack electrolyser technology that allows seawater to be used to produce green hydrogen. The project, supported by Dorset Council, will also see Logan Energy, Saline Business Services and the University of Exeter’s Centre for Future Clean Mobility work on assessing the technology in a port setting. Using seawater in electrolysis has gained huge attraction from technology developers due to its potential in eliminating desalination and water treatment requirements required for conventional technologies. However, electrolysing seawater can lead to [...]

H2-View News: Vinssen secures AiP to build hydrogen-powered tugboat

Korean Register awarded the certification for the vessel, which features a 2,700kW hydrogen fuel cell capable of storing the excess electricity generated in batteries for low-load operations. During high-output scenarios, the stored energy supplements the fuel cell’s power to ensure stable and efficient propulsion. The BP40-tonne fuel cell-powered tugboat project results from a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with KRE, a ship design, retrofit engineering and maritime infrastructure engineering company. In an online statement, Vinssen said the vessel provides a “practical and scalable eco-friendly propulsion system for port operations, optimising hydrogen energy use based on the tugboat’s operational profile. “The system [...]
