Built upon a previous demonstration, the project aims to identify obstacles for future implementation of the hydrogen carrier MCH. It has been equipped with a large-scale direct MCH electrolyser developed by the Japanese oil firm. Construction of the green hydrogen facility is expected to begin this year, ahead of the first MCH production next year. The European Commission’s Clean Industrial Deal (CID) launched last week (February 26) aims to break through regulatory, financing and scaling challenges in the hydrogen industry, but reactions suggest some gaps remain. The CID has introduced measures to support energy-intensive sectors and the clean tech industry, introducing a third European Hydrogen Bank (EHB) auction worth €1bn ($1.07bn) and adopting rules on low-carbon hydrogen in Q1 2025. HyGreen Teesside was expected to be one of the UK’s largest hydrogen production facilities, targeting 500MW of electrolyser capacity by 2030, with an initial 80MW phase slated to come online this year. In June 2023, bp conducted a public consultation to gather feedback on the green hydrogen facility, before it submitted a detailed planning application to Redcar and Cleveland Borough Council a year later. The Greek refiner ordered a 30MW pressurised alkaline plant, based on Chinese stack technology, from Metacon last August, with plans to use the green hydrogen output to partially replace grey hydrogen used at its Corinth refineries. The new project extension is expected to be valued at €10.6m ($11.15m), adding to the original scope of €19.8m ($20.8m).
