H2-View News: Sweden approves Liquid Wind’s hydrogen-based e-fuel plant in Umeå
Located in Umeå, Sweden, the FlagshipThree project is expected to capture 150,000 tonnes of biogenic CO2 through carbon capture and utilisation (CCU) technology. The permit was granted by the Swedish Land and Environmental Court in Umeå, with construction set to start next year. Liquid Wind and its partner Umeå Energi plan to launch plant operations in 2028. “Our e-fuel project in Umeå is now ready for commercialisation,” stated Claes Fredriksson, Liquid Wind CEO and founder. “With all agreements finalised and the permit secured, we are entering a new phase – one that offers investors a clear path to climate impact [...]
H2-View News: Update: IMO delays Net Zero vote amid carbon levy resistance
The vote on the proposed Net Zero Framework (NZF) was tabled for Friday (17 October), but was pushed back 12 months after a motion was put forward by Singapore and Saudi Arabia. It came after the countries, as well the US and Liberia, argued more time was needed to reach a consensus. The US and Saudi Arabia, in particular, have opposed the idea of a global carbon levy, describing it as an unfair green tax. President Donald Trump has called it a “global green new scam tax on shipping.” President Trump wrote on Truth Social, “We will not tolerate increased [...]

H2-View News: Helix Exploration identifies natural hydrogen potential in Montana
The UK-listed exploration company ran an independent study at the Montana Helium Fairway site. The results confirmed it contained minerals that generate hydrogen naturally when they interact with water under the Earth’s heat and pressure. The minerals, such as serpentine, olivine, and magnetite, are found in specific rock types called mafic and ultramafic rocks. Isotope analysis also revealed a helium signature at the site. The company believes the site has the potential to produce ultra-clean hydrogen more cheaply than conventional methods, if scaled successfully. “The science is clear: this is the type of system that can generate clean hydrogen naturally, [...]
H2-View News: Japan and South Korea strengthen ties on hydrogen, trade, and AI
Under the Korea-Japan Economic Cooperation 2.0, the two nations could jointly develop hydrogen technologies, build shared infrastructure, and collaborate on decarbonisation strategies. While details are thin, they may also coordinate efforts in key areas such as hydrogen supply chains, mobility solutions including fuel cell vehicles, and industrial applications aimed at reducing carbon emissions. The deal could also serve as a stepping stone for broader regional cooperation, including trilateral efforts with the US. Speaking at the 32nd Korea-Japan Business Conference in Tokyo on October 17, Keidanren Chair Tsutsui Yoshinobu emphasised the growing need for strategic regional cooperation. “Amid a world of [...]
H2-View News: Hydrogen-powered USV completes sea trials as developer eyes defence markets
The USV Pioneer completed a cruise out to Plymouth Sound in the UK Southwest on Thursday (16 October), concluding a series of public outreach events throughout the summer. The 14-metre, 25-tonne aluminium vessel is designed for sensor deployment and recovery, capable of operating at up to 6 knots and enduring heavy seas. It is equipped with a 63kW lithium-ion battery with a 45kW Nuvera fuel cell range extender. When equipped with its full hydrogen storage capacity of 23kg, the team expects it could operate for up to nine days. The vessel operated on battery power alone for the 16 October [...]
H2-View News: Green hydrogen trial starts at Japan water plant
Located at Japan’s largest power-to-gas plant in Yamanashi Prefecture, the trial involves replacing part of the site’s heat energy with hydrogen using newly developed high-efficiency, low-NOx hydrogen boilers. The 16MW facility will explore how hydrogen can substitute natural gas in beverage production, a model with implications for decarbonising food and drink manufacturing globally. The trial also involves Suntory Hakushu Distillery. If operating round-the-clock, hydrogen production would total 2,200 tonnes annually. “From now until the end of 2026, we will demonstrate how this system procures power from renewable energies to produce green hydrogen that is in turn used for steam production,” [...]
H2-View News: German TSOs to open hydrogen pipeline capacity reservations next year
Hydrogen producers, industrial users, and traders will soon be able to secure slots in the future hydrogen pipeline network, which is currently being constructed. The move is expected to give developers and industrial offtakers greater planning certainty ahead of the network’s phased rollout. Companies will be able to make binding bookings for entry and exit points on the grid, which will later convert into firm capacity contracts once the network is operational. “Through the reservation concept, the network operators are providing a significant boost for the development of cross-border hydrogen transport,” a joint statement from the TSOs said. “With the [...]

H2-View News: Cadent connects East Coast Hydrogen Pipeline route to HyMarnham Power
The planned distribution network is expected to connect hydrogen production in the Humber and north Nottinghamshire to major industrial users in the East Midlands. Cadent’s latest route announcement includes HyMarnham Power’s 15MW facility, located at a former coal-fired power station. Due online in November, the project will receive revenue subsidies under the government’s Hydrogen Allocation Round 1 scheme. The gas distribution network operator said the proposed 140km purpose-built pipeline offers potential for “significant growth” in hydrogen production at the JG Pears-GeoPura joint project. “The site has the capability to grow at scale from a 15MW hydrogen production plant to over [...]
