Africa should stop jumping straight into mega-scale green hydrogen projects and instead focus on lining up realistic offtake and building local infrastructure and supply chains first. That is the conclusion of the Energy Industries Council’s (EIC) latest report, which found that despite 38GW of planned clean hydrogen production capacity, Africa has just 17MW in operation. Keele University said its new facility will produce green hydrogen from excess power generated by its on-site wind turbines and solar panels to allow its researchers to develop and test materials and infrastructure for the storage of the gas. Electrolysers are increasingly being viewed as a tool to support grid balancing, by receiving power during periods of high wind and solar output, and switching off during high end-user demand. Winners will be named on 10 March at an awards ceremony at the National Conference Centre in Birmingham on the eve of Hydrogen UK’s annual conference. “The 2026 shortlist reflects the breadth, maturity and momentum of the UK hydrogen sector, highlighting progress across production, infrastructure, transport, industry, finance and skills,” Hydrogen UK said. Egypt’s 100MW green hydrogen project, lined up to supply molecules to Europe through German-backed contracts, has started “partial” production, according to a government statement. The project, currently being commissioned by Norway’s Scatec, and backed by the Sovereign Fund of Egypt, Orascom Construction, and Fertiglobe in the Ain Sokhna Industrial Zone, was awarded the inaugural €397m ($462m) H2Global contract in 2024. The pair have signed a non-binding memorandum of understanding to assess, using HiiRoc’s plasma-based technology to decarbonise Tokyo Gas customers’ operations and explore potential uses for solid carbon. HiiRoc’s thermal plasma electrolysis (TPE) technology operates similarly to methane pyrolysis. However, the company uses electrical plasma torches, rather than heat, to split hydrocarbons into high-pressure hydrogen and solid carbon. It claims the system can produce hydrogen as cheaply as steam methane reforming without the need for carbon capture, while requiring less energy than electrolysis. The support will be provided to Norsk e-Fuel’s Finnish subsidiary Norsk e-Fuel Rauma Oy, which is developing a 100 million-litre green hydrogen-based e-fuel facility on Finland’s west coast. Rauma will use renewable energy to produce green hydrogen, which will be synthesised with captured carbon dioxide into aviation e-fuels. The support mechanism comes in the form of tax deductions over a period of up to 19 tax years once the project is operational to help reduce operating costs.
