H2-View News: World’s largest hydrogen sphere filled as NASA gears up for Moon missions

The US industrial gas firm delivered more than 50 trailer loads of liquid hydrogen to the 90-foot-tall sphere at NASA’s Kennedy Space Center in Florida. NASA will combine the hydrogen with liquid oxygen for use as fuel in cryogenic rocket engines for its Artemis missions, which aim to return humans to the Moon. Hydrogen has been used by NASA since the early 1960s, including on board its Saturn V. However, the energy carrier has caused issues in the Artemis missions. In September 2022, hydrogen leaks thwarted two launch attempts of NASA’s Artemis I rocket. Artemis I eventually launched in November [...]

H2-View News: European refiners may hold key to scaling green hydrogen

As significant emitters of carbon dioxide, refineries are rarely mentioned in a green or decarbonisation context – but upcoming regulatory changes mean their repositioning provides new opportunities for the beleaguered hydrogen sector to grow. According to the report, “Isn’t it ironic? How Europe’s oil refiners could offer a route to scale up green hydrogen”, European refiners are set to require ~0.5 million tonnes of green hydrogen annually by 2030 to comply with EU regulations, replacing about 30% of current CO2-emitting hydrogen production. High costs have provided a brake on green hydrogen projects, but the new EU regulations offer a solution to [...]

H2-View News: Infineon switches Austrian chip plant to green hydrogen with Linde electrolyser

High-purity hydrogen is used in process gas in semiconductor production, and until now, Infineon has relied on natural gas-based hydrogen, which was delivered by truck from Germany. However, H2 View understands that the proton exchange membrane (PEM) electrolysis plant designed and built by Linde will produce around 290 tonnes of hydrogen per year to meet the facility’s demand. “We are replacing the existing hydrogen from fossil sources with green hydrogen,” explained Thomas Reisinger, Board Member for Operations at Infineon. “In this way, we are reducing CO2 emissions in the supply chain and making a further contribution from Villach to the [...]

H2-View News: JetZero partners with SHZ to explore liquid hydrogen-powered all-wing aircraft

Under the agreement, the clean aircraft venture will support SHZ in adapting its patented liquid hydrogen storage and distribution technologies for a Z4 variant, expected to deliver “up to 50% greater fuel efficiency and lower emissions” than conventional jets. The partnership has been formed under the NASA Advanced Aircraft Concepts for Environmental Sustainability 2050 (AACES) project, which is designed to analyse and design technical storage and distribution solutions for liquid hydrogen air transport. JetZero received an AACES grant last year to explore technologies that would enable cryogenic liquid hydrogen as a fuel for commercial aviation. The United Airlines-backed venture is [...]

H2-View News: Analysis: Why hydrogen blending is up for discussion again

Hydrogen blending is back on the agenda. This time, grid decarbonisation isn’t the primary motive. Now, it is viewed as a way to derisk clean hydrogen projects while demand remains low and infrastructure undeveloped. However, it’s contentious. Regardless of how pragmatic a route it may be, blending faces stark opposition from both physical and financial efficiency hawks and members of the public. The growth in discussions comes as the UK energy department consults the market on allowing up to 2% hydrogen blends into the National Transmission System (NTS). The consultation, which launched in July, aims to assess whether the benefits [...]

H2-View News: Liquid Sun secures aviation partners for hydrogen-based e-SAF pilot

Located in Espoo, the University of Tampere spinout has said the project will be a pre-commercial pilot, focused on building the ecosystem, testing value chains and refining the production process, which uses biogenic CO2 and green hydrogen as a feedstock. Alongside Liquid Sun, Finnair and Finavia, ABB will act as a technology partner and accelerator in the initiative, supporting system integration and scaling, while Fortum will provide renewable electricity and, in future, green hydrogen for production. The partners have said the plant will be operational by the Autumn (2025). While the release doesn’t confirm a firm offtake agreement, the involvement [...]

H2-View News: US Naval Research Lab trials hydrogen generator to power Marines in the field

Based on Marine feedback, the portable generator extends mission range and endurance, supports distributed operations, and cuts maintenance and logistics demands, all while operating quietly with zero emissions. The system has undergone field trials at multiple training bases between 2022 and 2025, with the Marine Corps Expeditionary Energy Office (E2O) ensuring it meets operational needs and aligns with the Corps’ energy strategy. “H-SUP increases lethality by keeping us powered and hard to find,” stated Capt. Joshua Ashley, US Marine Corps and E20 Science and Technology Analyst. “We ensure this technology meets the needs of marines on the ground – quiet, [...]

H2-View News: Strategy pivots are main cause of low-carbon hydrogen cancellations

It found strategic changes accounted for 24% of cancelled projects, representing around 6 million tonnes per annum of hydrogen capacity, as firms return to core businesses and scale down more risky hydrogen investments. For example, BP and Australia’s Origin Energy have suspended or cancelled multiple projects, citing the need to cut costs and prioritise core areas. “This retrenchment is understandable given the nascent and complex nature of clean hydrogen – initial targets often outpaced more realistic business and transition models,” the energy research company states. Lack of robust demand signals have also led to significant project attrition, accounting for 13% [...]

H2-View News: Former Dow CFO elected to Air Products board

The industrial gas giant announced Howard Ungerleider was elected as a company director and will serve as a member of the Audit and Finance Committee, effective 1 September 2025. Ungerleider previously held the CFO role at Dow Inc., at its predecessor DowDuPont, between 2014 and 2023. He also serves on the boards of American Airlines and IT firm Kyndryl. Air Products Chairman Wayne Smith said Ungerleider was an “excellent addition” to the gas firm’s board. “We look forward to applying his extensive expertise as Air Products advances its mission to create exceptional value through operational excellence and disciplined capital management,” [...]

H2-View News: WA government offers Japan stake in 26GW green hydrogen and renewables project: reports

The planned 26GW renewables hub for green hydrogen and ammonia in Pilbara suffered a setback last month when BP pulled out of its 64% stake, leaving InterContinental Energy and CWP Global as co-developers, who have reportedly insisted the project will still proceed. The WA government is courting Japanese energy firms to step into the AUD $50bn ($33bn) project, with Japan seen as a natural replacement investor given its reliance on imports and long-term hydrogen demand. Japan’s interest is evident – oil major ENEOS announced a small-scale green hydrogen export project in Australia last year, though developers there have also faced [...]
