H2-View News: Germany launches consultation on second CCFD scheme
The Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy (BMWE) said the second round of CCFDs would be “more flexible, more SME-friendly, and more technology neutral” than the 2024 auction, which awarded €2.8bn ($3.3bn) to 15 projects. Energy Minister Katherina Reiche recently told the Bundestag that €6bn ($7.02bn) would be available for CCFDs in 2026. The mechanism aims to protect companies investing in low-carbon processes against price risks associated with energy costs and emissions trading schemes. “If the CO2 price rises, the subsidy decreases, and vice-versa,” the BMWE said. “Other subsidies, such as electricity price compensation, are deducted from the subsidy [...]
H2-View News: SIAD and Brembo invest €2m in advanced hydrogen tech start-up Hydrospark
Hydrospark has developed a platform that uses ceramic materials to produce solid oxide electrolyser cells (SOECs) with higher energy density and reduced manufacturing costs. According to the company, these cells produce electricity and heat from hydrogen with high efficiency and zero emissions. They can also convert renewable energy into hydrogen. “This investment will allow us to validate our technology in an actual production facility, while seizing the opportunity to grow and position ourselves as a leading player in the hydrogen market,” said Fabrizio Gualandris, CEO of Hydrospark. Using this funding, it aims to break even and achieve an annual production [...]
H2-View News: Masdar looks to move hydrogen and derivatives via rail with new agreement
Under a new memorandum of understanding (MOU), the state-owned renewables firm will assess using Etihad Rail’s national network to transport hydrogen, ammonia, methanol, sustainable aviation fuel and more. Etihad Rail currently operates 900km of network across the UAE from Ghuwaifat to Fujairah, linking ports, industrial clusters, and trade centres. © Etihad Rail The operator’s CEO, Shadi Malak, said the network would provide “critical infrastructure” for moving green hydrogen and derivatives at “scale”. The technical details behind the cooperation remain unclear. Most long-distance hydrogen transportation developments have recently focused on pipelines or using derivatives like ammonia to reduce costs. While hydrogen-by-rail [...]
H2-View News: ‘World’s largest’ solid oxide electrolyser starts hydrogen production at Neste refinery
The 2.6MW Sunfire-made electrolyser operates at up to 850ºC to produce over 60kg of green hydrogen per hour, making it what project partners call the “world’s largest” multi-megawatt high-temperature electrolyser in an industrial environment. Hydrogen generated by the system is being used to replace grey hydrogen at the site to help reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Installed as part of the EU-funded MultiPLHY project by Neste, Sunfire, French research organisation CEA, and energy firm Engie, the electrolyser uses heat produced by the refinery to reduce the amount of electricity required for hydrogen production. “This installation is the largest of its kind [...]
H2-View News: Morocco weighs up hydrogen and SAF prospects
A recent study by the analyst firm Boston Consulting Group found that by positioning itself as a pioneer in the production and adoption of SAF, Morocco could not only steal a march on its neighbours, but also strengthen its energy autonomy and its image. There is lots that comes with that statement, of course. One challenge is how to push forward SAF when green hydrogen and ammonia have yet to take off. This may explain why references to SAF were few and far between last week at the World Power-to-X Summit in Marrakech – certainly compared with the two renewable [...]
H2-View News: EIFO, Barclays back GeoPura’s 15MW UK project and Danish expansion with £27m green loan
The loan package from Barclays and the Export and Investment Fund of Denmark (EIFO) will be used to build its UK government-backed 15MW HyMarnham joint project with JG Pears. The package, which includes a £16.5m ($22.2m) guarantee from EIFO, marks the Danish state-owned financial institution’s “first” international Power-to-X guarantee. “The UK has been our single largest market for years thanks to our involvement in offshore wind, and we now see a clear opportunity to expand our role in green hydrogen,” said EIFO Chief Commercial Officer, Peter Boeskov. HyMarnham, which is due online in November, will receive revenue subsidies under the [...]
H2-View News: ITM Power wins FEED contract for unnamed HAR2-shortlisted hydrogen plant
The electrolyser manufacturer said the contract for the undisclosed project was based on “multiple” 5MW containerised systems – often selected for ease of installation. While project capacity and client details remain undisclosed, the plant is expected to come online in 2028. However, the development has been selected for the Hydrogen Allocation Round 2. This scheme is designed to back larger green hydrogen projects, with 27 projects shortlisted earlier this year, representing up to 765MW of capacity. HAR2 will offer contracts for difference-style revenue support to projects to give developers long-term price certainty. ITM has already been selected to supply six [...]
H2-View News: Hydrogen mobility ‘delivers with scale and infrastructure’ – Johnson Matthey
The economics of hydrogen mobility are the reverse of battery-electric vehicles (BEV), according to Johnson Matthey’s (JM) Eugene McKenna, with high upfront costs from infrastructure but cheaper scale-up once in place. The company’s Vice-President and Sustainable Technologies Director said that once a full-scale network is in place, the last million vehicles will, by definition, be the cheapest. H2-View News: Topsoe to license technology for planned Texas blue methanol plant
The plant is expected to reform natural gas into hydrogen-rich syngas, capture much of the CO2, and use the hydrogen in that syngas to produce blue methanol for markets like shipping. Sandpiper said the facility will produce 3,000 tonnes of methanol per day. However, the project is still at the pre-final investment decision (FID) stage, with production targeted for 2030. Topsoe has been developing its SynCOR technology, as it believes methanol is a proven way for industries to decarbonise, according to Henrik Rasmussen, Managing Director of Topsoe Americas. Topsoe said its autothermal reforming system is distinguished by maturity and comparatively [...]
H2-View News: CF Industries delivers first low-carbon ammonia cargo to Europe
Trafigura purchased 23,000 tonnes of low-carbon ammonia and loaded the cargo on 25 September, acting as the middleman between the two companies. Certified under the Verified Ammonia Carbon Intensity (VACI) programme, the ammonia will be used to make low-carbon caprolactam – a key chemical used in plastics and ammonium sulphate. “By integrating certified low-carbon feedstocks into our production of caprolactam/ammonium sulphate and downstream into PA6, we are showing our commitment to low-carbon materials and helping our customers meet their environmental goals,” explained Envalior’s Thorsten Bredemann. The blue ammonia was shipped from the CF Industries Donaldsonville complex in Louisiana, the US, [...]
