H2-View News: Storegga seeks new owners for 70MW Scottish hydrogen project after planning refusal
Storegga is seeking to offload its 70MW green hydrogen project in Scotland to “new owners” after it failed to secure planning permission, the company has told H2 View. The deadline for the carbon capture and hydrogen project developer to appeal Moray Council’s planning rejection for its Speyside project passed on Thursday (22 January). The council unanimously rejected the project in October, citing concerns over water use from the River Spey, visual impact and increased traffic. The development could have scaled to 200MW.
H2-View News: Major Nordic-Baltic hydrogen pipeline seeks market backing
The call for interest survey looks to strengthen the pipeline’s business case with letters of intent from regional players, while gaining technical and commercial intelligence from potential collaborators and offtakers. While input at this stage remains non-binding, the six bodies in the joint-led development hope to further discussions with respondents. NBHC aims to connect hydrogen producers, storage, and end-users in Finland, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, and Germany. It’s being advanced by transmission system operators Gasgrid Finland, Elering, Conexus Baltic Grid, Amber Grid, Gaz-System and Ontras. The survey is now open and runs until March 31. The pipeline entered the feasibility phase [...]
H2-View News: HYDS eyes 2029 start-up for 10MW Gothenburg hydrogen project from Statkraft
The acquisition includes the project company, environmental permits and lease agreement, as well as “external financing”, with HYDS aiming to produce the first molecules in 2029. Statkraft began developing the project after inking a deal with the Port of Gothenburg in 2021 to explore setting up production in the port area. The facility is planned with 5–10MW of electrolyser capacity, which could produce up to four tonnes of green hydrogen. HYDS said the site could help reduce carbon dioxide emissions by up to 60 tonnes per day. Hydrogen produced by the plant is expected to be sold to “external customers,” [...]
H2-View News: Hong Kong Financial Secretary backs idea for regional SAF hub
Speaking in a finance decarbonisation panel at Davos, he said, “Hong Kong is small, we may not be able to accommodate it, but we can co-invest across the border in China … to ensure the project is viable.” Mo-po’s look overseas reflects Hong Kong’s limited land, feedstock, and renewable energy availability, as well as the absence of large-scale refining infrastructure. The Financial Secretary added that Hong Kong, which is targeting carbon neutrality by 2050 with a 50% reduction from 2005 levels by 2035, wants to have more hydrogen on its roads. “Whether this can be a business case, we don’t [...]
H2-View News: Sweden launches plans for first hydrogen valley with €19.8m EU backing
The High Coast to West Coast (HiWhyV) valley plans to link potential hydrogen users in Västernorrland (the High Coast Hub) with the renewable abundant West Coast of Sweden (the West Coast Hub), where plans are progressing for green hydrogen production. The link could produce up to 132,000 tonnes of green hydrogen per year across nine production sites, according to the European Commission. The Research Institutes of Sweden (Rise) will coordinate the project, which will encompass 45 industry, research and public sector organisations. These include the likes of e-fuel developer Liquid Wind and fuel cell firm PowerCell. Backed by Horizon Europe [...]
H2-View News: Merz: Just 10% of EU competitiveness plan implemented
Mario Draghi’s report on the future of European competitiveness laid out clear recommendations on how Europe can boost its economic growth. But speaking at Davos, Merz said only around 10% of its proposals have been put in place. “We have to do much more than that,” he said. “The entire energy system has to be reformed. We have new gas power plants in place, so this is work in progress. We are faced with one big obstacle, and that’s productivity. Within that the obstacles are cost, bureaucratic burdens, taxes and labour costs.” Merz said Germany will convene an extraordinary meeting [...]
H2-View News: BKW impairs coal asset, eyes 40% share in hydrogen-capable German gas plant
The non-cash write-down relates to its 33% share in the 726MW Wilhelmshaven power plant and will drag the firm’s reported 2025 EBIT to CHF 540–560m ($680.3–705.5m), from a previously guided CHF 650–750m ($818.9–944.8m). Instead, it will look to reallocate capital to acquire up to 40% of a hydrogen-capable gas-fired power plant under development in Hamm. The Hamm project is being advanced by municipal utility firm Trianel, which operates an existing 850MW gas-fired combined-cycle power plant, made up of two units. The firm has previously announced plans for an additional 500MW hydrogen-ready gas unit at the Hamm site, which would initially [...]
H2-View News: Why Honda is about to stop making fuel cells with GM
Japan-headquartered Honda’s decision to end hydrogen fuel cell production with US conglomerate General Motors (GM) brings an unceremonious end to one of the automotive sector’s most high-profile hydrogen collaborations. Launched in 2017, the Fuel Cell System Manufacturing (FCSM) joint venture was intended to prove that scale, shared intellectual property and combined purchasing power could push fuel cell vehicles towards commercial reality. Honda brought decades of fuel cell R&D and a long-term belief in hydrogen as a zero-emission pathway, while GM added manufacturing scale and access to the US market. H2-View News: ‘Nobody is ready to pay for clean fuels’ says TotalEnergies CEO
The clean fuels panel at Davos 2026 today heard hard-hitting comments from CEOs and economists as affordability was repeatedly stressed as the key issue affecting scale up and mass-market acceptance. Elaine Buckberg, former Chief Economist at General Motors, set the scene, outlining how renewable diesel “is incredibly expensive” and urged the industry to focus on implementing clean fuels in hard-to-abate sectors – citing sustainable aviation fuel as “number one” in the pecking order. Patrick Pouyanné, CEO at TotalEnergies, said the debate has shifted from sustainability to affordability and security, exacerbated by geopolitical and economic challenges. This is a paid article, [...]
H2-View News: H2Site opens Norwegian unit to deploy ammonia-to-hydrogen tech in shipping
Through its new H2Site Norway arm the Bilbao-based firm will supply onboard systems that crack ammonia into hydrogen for use in fuel cells or blending in engines. The move is aimed at accelerating demonstration projects with Norwegian shipowners, shipyards, and offshore operators, amid growing government support for maritime decarbonisation. H2Site has been building and operating ammonia crackers since 2023, and has carried out maritime-focused projects addressing integration with fuel cells and engines. Its core IP centres palladium-alloy membranes for reactors and separators to remove hydrogen from streams, including natural gas and ammonia. While several maritime engine makers are developing ammonia-fuelled [...]
