H2-View News: JM, Syensqo pilot PGM and ionomer recovery from PEM components

The duo said they recovered platinum group metals (PGMs) and ionomers from industrial PEM catalyst-coated membranes (CCMs) and reintegrated them into new membrane electrode assemblies (MEAs). Currently, PGMs within CCMs are recycled through methods requiring incineration to remove organic materials before further processing to separate and purify the metals. Platinum, iridium, and ruthenium are all high-cost metals common in PEM CCMs, which form the core of membrane electrode assemblies (MEAs) where electrochemical reactions occur. However, this approach means membranes – made from perfluorosulfonic acid-based polymers, known as ionomers – typically degrade or fluorinate during high-temperature recycling processes, making direct recovery [...]

H2-View News: EU Industrial Accelerator Act lands today with hydrogen sector watching closely

The European Commission is due to publish its long-awaited Industrial Accelerator Act (IAA) today (4 March), a proposal that could determine whether Europe’s strained clean hydrogen sector secures meaningful demand support. The publication had been delayed by a week, reportedly due to internal disagreements over proposed local-content requirements – a sign of the political sensitivity surrounding trade protection. However, the Act is expected to have a wide-reaching impact for both incumbent industrials and clean technology players alike. H2-View News: EU dismisses CBAM suspension for fertilisers following hydrogen lobby pressure

Wopke Hoekstra, the Commission’s climate chief, confirmed the move, stressing the EU’s carbon border adjustment mechanism (CBAM) would provide a level playing field for European fertiliser producers. CBAM, which covers hydrogen, electricity, fertilisers, aluminium, iron and steel, and cement, places a carbon price on goods imported into the EU – in line with the internal emissions trading scheme on domestic producers. However, since it came into force, several EU member states have been lobbying Brussels to remove fertilisers from the scheme, warning it could drive up prices for farmers. Various hydrogen lobby groups and ammonia companies had warned that a suspension could undermine [...]

H2-View News: EverWind secures $175m to advance Nova Scotia wind and green ammonia project

The investment from global asset manager Nuveen will fund the construction of over 650MW of onshore wind generation across Nova Scotia for EverWind’s Point Tupper Green Fuels Project. Scheduled to break ground this year and reach commercial operation by 2028, EverWind says its first phase would produce 200,000 tonnes of green ammonia per year, increasing to up to one million tonnes in its second phase. Most of this looks set for export to markets like Europe. In August 2022, German firms Eon and Uniper both signed non-binding memoranda of understanding with EverWind, each for an annual 500,000 tonnes. The new [...]

H2-View News: Cadent opens consultation on 150km UK hydrogen pipeline

The H2East pipeline would connect hydrogen producers, storage, and end-users across the Humber region and Nottinghamshire, running largely underground, with some overground infrastructure. Part of a collaboration with National Gas and Northern Gas Networks (NGN), Cadent says the pipeline could help steel, chemicals, materials, and food manufacturing switch from natural gas to hydrogen. The company has not yet announced the pipeline’s planned capacity. Over the course of a six-week consultation, the firm will present its plans and ask for public views on the development. Feedback can be given by email or post. It will also host 11 local drop-in events [...]

H2-View News: German TSO commissions 110km hydrogen pipeline to supply steelmaker

Mannesmann Grossrohr (MGR) and Mannesmann Line Pipe (MLP), both Salzgitter subsidiaries, will construct almost 110km of pipeline for Salzgitter’s green steel operations. The firms will complete separate sections of the long-distance FGL 702 pipeline between Bad Lauchstädt and Salzgitter, which will eventually carry green hydrogen for use in Salzgitter’s Salcos direct reduced iron (DRI) project. A direct source of the hydrogen has not been confirmed. However, the new 110km installation will connect to Germany’s 9,000km hydrogen core network. MGR will be responsible for 70.6km of pipeline between Salzgitter and Wefensleben, while MLP will take on 38.2km from Angersdorf to Preußlitz. [...]

H2-View News: New Plug CEO vows profitability as firm cuts cash burn, posts $1.7bn annual loss

Revenues increased 12.9% year-on-year to $710m due to higher equipment sales, while in Q4, it posted a gross profit of $5.5m, compared to a margin loss of 122.5% a year earlier. Plug attributes the margin improvement to increased sales volumes at higher prices, fuel network enhancements, and manufacturing efficiency gains. It ended 2025 with $368.5m in unrestricted cash, with cash burn from operating activities reduced to $535.8m from $728.6m in 2024. Despite the reduction, liquidity remains tight. Despite those improvements, the company recorded around $763m in non-cash charges on asset impairments and capital transactions, related to its cost-cutting program. Plug [...]

H2-View News: Financing gap remains Europe’s biggest hydrogen infrastructure bottleneck: GIE

Europe’s hydrogen infrastructure framework is largely in place, but investment de-risking remains the sector’s most immediate bottleneck, according to trade body Gas Infrastructure Europe (GIE). Policy Manager Tobias Bühnen told a recent H2 View webinar that while EU rules covering network access, unbundling and cross-border coordination have been established, a “significant gap” between projected revenues and upfront costs is delaying development. H2-View News: Singapore duo explores floating hydrogen power solutions for AI data centres

Bridge Data Centres (BDC) and local renewable firm Concord New Energy (CNE) signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) aimed at research, engineering, and deployment of clean energy solutions for AI data centres, including the floating power generator. Few technical details have been shared. However, the pair claim the floating hydrogen-powered generator would be designed to “deliver flexible and modular clean power capacity.” They say they will explore “advanced power system architectures and generation configurations designed to enhance the resilience and reliability of AI-ready data centre campuses.” BDC says that barge-based power generation solutions can offer structural advantages suited to Singapore’s operating environment, [...]

H2-View News: Former Air Products executive takes over as Acwa CEO

Dr Samir Serhan assumed responsibility of the power and water desalination firm from Marco Arcelli, who had been in post for around three years. Serhan previously served as Acwa’s executive vice president for six months after an eight-year stint as COO at industrial gas major Air Products. He left Air Products in September 2024 amid early calls from investors for an overhaul at the company, which was deemed to be expanding too far into green hydrogen projects. Acwa, alongside Air Products, is a one-third owner of the 2.2GW Neom green hydrogen project in Saudi Arabia. In a statement, Acwa stressed [...]
