H2-View News: Energy and climate policy under scrutiny at US Senate hearing

While the tone was largely equable for the first hour and 11 minutes, the mood changed when Senator Alex Padilla from California began questioning the CEO of Liberty Energy. He put Wright on the spot about social media comments relating to climate change as ‘hype’, at a time when Los Angeles struggles to come to terms with widespread destruction from the wildfires. “Tell that to the families of the more than two dozen lost,” he said. While Wright was mindful not to repeat the word, he said he stood by his past comments – which seemed to jar with earlier comments [...]

H2-View News: Consultation opens on UK hydrogen levy, raising questions on future costs

The government today (January 16) opened a 12-week consultation for the Gas Shipper Obligation (GSO) that would be used to fund its so-called hydrogen levy. As passed in October 2023, “gas shippers” – which are defined as a company that buys gas from producers, trades gas on wholesale markets and sells it to gas suppliers – would bear the brunt of the hydrogen levy to fund market ramp-up. Read more: UK Energy Act passed – with hydrogen levy attached The government plans to introduce the GSO in 2028, aligning with the first hydrogen allocation round (HAR1) contracts to provide a [...]

H2-View News: Hygen secures HSBC UK funding to scale green hydrogen facility in Birmingham

Through HSBC Equipment Finance, Hygen will receive backing in the form of asset finance lent to advance its facility at the Tyseley Energy Park (TEP) and develop additional sites across the UK. From its refuelling unit at the Tyseley site, Hygen supplies hydrogen to major customers such as National Express and JCB for their decarbonisation initiatives. “HSBC UK’s confidence in our business, and the potential of hydrogen as a low-carbon energy source, is truly encouraging,” explained Kevin Selleslags, Hygen CEO. “Securing bank funding also sends an important signal to the market about the opportunities for this technology.” Representing HSBC UK’s [...]

H2-View News: $635m boost for hydrogen and EV infrastructure across 27 US states

H2 View understands that the grants will fund 49 projects implementing more than 11,500 EV charging ports and hydrogen and natural gas fuelling infrastructure along corridors. They will span 27 States, four federally recognised tribes and the District of Columbia. The build-out of hydrogen refuelling infrastructure will support the nation’s goal of deploying zero-emission medium and heavy-duty vehicles to reduce diesel emissions. Commenting on the grants, Gabe Klein, Executive Director of the Joint Office of Energy and Transportation, said, “Today’s investments supplement a combination of federal tax incentives, state and local funding, and private investment to fill gaps in the [...]

H2-View News: Ador Powertron unveils 500MW green hydrogen power electronics plant in Pune

The factory in Pune, Maharastra, will produce megawatt-scale transformers and rectifiers based on insulated-gate bipolar transistor (IGBT), silicon carbide (SiC) and thyristor technologies. Transformers and rectifiers are essential components in electrolyser systems. Transformers convert high-voltage AC supply into lower-voltage AC to meet system requirements. Rectifiers convert the transformer’s AC output into DC. The new Yonder Hub, named under Ador’s Yonder H2 brand, is primarily aimed at meeting demand in Europe, as well as India’s own renewable energy targets. Read more: Ador Group enters the hydrogen ecosystem with Yonder H2 Ador has also planned a further expansion of the facility over [...]

H2-View News: ADNOC pilots methane-to-graphene and hydrogen tech with Baker Hughes and Levidian

Working with Baker Hughes, the gas major deployed UK-based Levidian’s LOOP technology with the capacity to produce over one tonne of graphene per year and a further tonne of hydrogen annually. The pilot deployment also collected data to further refine and develop AI modelling and digital twins to reduce energy consumption and maximise graphene output for future installations. Graphene produced by the pilot plant will be evaluated and used by ADNOC’s technology team to explore applications. Mohamed Al Hasemi, Chief Operation Officer of ADNOC Gas, said, “By transforming methane into valuable graphene and clean hydrogen, we are unlocking new value [...]

H2-View News: Asahi Kasei secures ¥11.4bn for 2GW hydrogen electrolyser component expansion

The company plans to bolster the production of cell frames and membranes for alkaline electrolysers at its plant in Kawasaki. It comes as part of Asahi Kasei’s previously announced plans to build the 2GW plant by 2026 – adding to its 1GW of chlor-alkali ion-exchange membrane production. Expected to spend around ¥35bn ($224m) on the development, the company says it expects to receive a subsidy of up to ¥11.4bn for the plant. The company aims to use experience across both its hydrogen and chlor-alkali electrolysis businesses to respond to “the uncertain expansion of the hydrogen market and the growing demand [...]
