H2-View News: Breaking ground in mobility with hydrogen: H2 View webinar

JCB’s Tim Burnhope has stressed the need for a “technology-neutral” approach in the mobility industry, as its hydrogen internal combustion engine (ICE) gains approval in over 10 European countries. During an H2 View webinar today (January 24), Burnhope highlighted that there is now a growing acceptance of hydrogen in mobility, despite an “overwhelming resistance” initially, as the ICE technology wasn’t deemed “a technology for the future.” This is a paid article, to read the article in full you can sign in if you are subscribed or subscribe today.

H2-View News: Brittany allocates €1.5m to hydrogen-powered catamaran project

The zero-emission passenger shuttle vessel will be used in La Forêt-Fouesnant in Brittany, France, although the project is currently in its initial production phase with only a concept ready. It will be equipped with electric propulsion and hydrogen storage tanks and be offered as a bare-boat charter solution, but could also be sold to shipowners or public authorities responsible for inter-island, urban bay crossings or leisure sea trips. The electric motors will draw energy from buffer storage batteries, while the onboard hydrogen will serve as a complementary energy source, with a higher capacity than the batteries. Combining hydrogen with oxygen [...]

H2-View News: Africa’s hydrogen ambitions held back by regulatory gaps: EIC

In its Africa OPEX Report, the Energy Industries Council (EIC) highlights that, despite Africa’s vast renewable energy potential and promising outlook, the continent continues to grapple with securing reliable offtake agreements, developing a comprehensive regulatory framework, and constructing resilient infrastructure. Africa is poised to become a key supplier of hydrogen to Europe as efforts intensify to reduce reliance on Russian gas. According to the report, 61.1 GW of renewable energy capacity is already operational across the continent, and under the REPowerEU Plan, Europe aims to import 10 million tonnes of green hydrogen annually from Africa. In Sub-Saharan Africa, countries like [...]

H2-View News: John Cockerill heat recovery steam generator certified as hydrogen-ready

The Belgian firm’s HRSGs are steam generators that recover heat from hot flue gases at the outlet of gas turbines. It has modified the heat recovery boiler design to allow the generators to operate with up to 100% hydrogen instead of fossil fuels. The system has now been certified for combined cycles and cogeneration applications, with drum-type and once-through boiler designs. The certificate also validates the company’s expertise in vertical and horizontal HRSG designs, with or without supplementary or fresh air firing, for new installations or retrofits. TÜD-SÜD has confirmed that John Cockerill’s hydrogen-ready concept for the bidding phase of [...]

H2-View News: Analysis: What does Trump’s IRA and IIJA funding suspension actually mean for hydrogen?

President Donald Trump’s suspension of funding from two key pieces of Biden-era laws has cast uncertainty over the future of clean hydrogen development. On his first day in office, Trump issued an executive order to halt further funding from the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) and Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act (IIJA), which offered production tax credits of up to $3/kg and a combined $7bn of funding for seven hydrogen hubs, respectively. The acts will have their processes, policies and programmes for issuing funds reviewed, with department heads expected to issue recommendations to “enhance their alignment” with Trump’s oil and gas [...]
