Set to be installed at the Kårstø Gas Processing Plant in Rogaland, Norwary, operated by Gassco, the electrolyser will run for 10,000 hours, offering performance data from various operating regimes to verify its long-term commercial operation.

Yara has joined to test the Hystar technology for the future production of green ammonia. It is hoped the pilot project will demonstrate how the electrolysers can be utilised to reduce the cost of green hydrogen for green ammonia production at an industrial scale.

According to Hystar, offshore wind player, Equinor is using the project to demonstrate hydrogen production tailored to suit the variable output found in wind applications.

It is hoped HyPilot will drive ambitious and targeted industry efforts to cut carbon emissions by realising the potential of hydrogen. Hystar claims its recent test results have shown that it is able to meet or even exceed European targets for hydrogen production,

In an interview H2 View, Hystar explained its patented electrolyser membranes are significantly thinner, offering better efficiency due to lower resistance across the membranes.

Commenting on the company’s involvement in the HyPilot project, Lise Winther, SVP Upstream Projects & Technologies at Yara Clean Ammonia, said, “We look forward to collaborating with Hystar and studying the results of the 1MW pilot electrolyser project. The knowledge we gain from the HyPilot project will give valuable input to our work in developing green ammonia for fertiliser, deep-sea shipping, and power production.”

This month (September 2022), ENGIE revealed it will develop its industrial-scale renewable hydrogen project in Pilbara, Western Australia, which is set to supply Yara’s ammonia plant with hydrogen.

Fredrick Mowill, CEO of Hystar, added, “HyPilot marks a significant moment for the hydrogen industry, bringing together leading industry names to showcase Hystar’s patented, ultra-efficient electrolysers. Today’s announcement is a key step towards scaling up and enabling widespread commercial deployment of large-scale green hydrogen production.

“We are pleased that Yara, Enova, Equinor, and Gassco share our vision of commercialising technology for lower-cost green hydrogen. Working together in the years ahead will enable us to drive unseen levels of cost and production efficiencies across hard-to-abate sectors.”
