The Gloucestershire, UK-based company’s patented technology is capable of converting biogenic materials into clear hydrogen, with the CO2 captured and stored. Other materials such as seaweed and plastic waste could be used.

The company is now planning to build its first commercial demonstrator to produce hydrogen at scale, ready for 2026. Wild Hydrogen believes this will prove it’s a “viable method for producing carbon-negative fuel, and an opportunity to make Gloucestershire and the south west a hub for this kind of technology.”

The National Composites Centre in Bristol and the Royal Agricultural University in Cirencester helped develop the product, whilst Wild Hydrogen also partnered with the University of Bath to offer opportunities to students. The company has also worked with innovation space Farm 491, Cranfield University and the Manufacturing Technology Centre.

“Gloucestershire County Council has set ambitious targets in its Climate Change Strategy – an 80% reduction of emissions by 2030 and Net Zero by 2045,” Wild Hydrogen CEO, James Milner, said.

“With clear targets and strategy in place, it is up to innovators like us to create the solutions that will achieve these goals.”

Mark Wickham, co-inventor of the technology, claimed the solution will be “simple, bulletproof and highly cost-effective. “It’s a game changer in hydrogen production with carbon capture,” he added.

Earlier this year (2024), the Redding Rancheria Tribe received $500,000 in funding to support the development of its hydrogen production facility, which uses forrest biomass as a feedstock.
