Why Honda is about to stop making fuel cells with GM

Japan-headquartered Honda’s decision to end hydrogen fuel cell production with US conglomerate General Motors (GM) brings an unceremonious end to one of the automotive sector’s most high-profile hydrogen collaborations.

Launched in 2017, the Fuel Cell System Manufacturing (FCSM) joint venture was intended to prove that scale, shared intellectual property and combined purchasing power could push fuel cell vehicles towards commercial reality.

Honda brought decades of fuel cell R&D and a long-term belief in hydrogen as a zero-emission pathway, while GM added manufacturing scale and access to the US market.
