Powered by a hydrogen-fuel cell, the emission free, Volvo HX04 carries 12kg of hydrogen, with an operation time of approximately four hours, Volvo CE has said.
The development and building of the six-wheeled prototype has primarily been carried out at Volvo CE’s facility in Braås, Sweden, with hopes that insights from the concept will contribute to future commercial production.
H2 View understands, the Volvo HX04, comes out of a four year research project aimed to support sustainable vehicle strategic research, innovation, and development.
The project was funded by FFI, a Swedish collaboration between VINNOVA, Swedish Energy Agency, and Swedish Transport Administration. Partnering with Volvo CE throughout the project were, Research Institutes of Sweden, and Powecell Sweden.
Fellow founding member of H2Accelerate, a collaboration seeking to accelerate mass hydrogen truck roll-outs in Europe, Shell installed a hydrogen refuelling station at Volvo CE’s test track in Braås.

Carolina Diez Ferrer, Head of Advanced Engineering Programmes at Volvo CE, said, “Being inventors of the world’s first articulated hauler more than 55 years ago, we are happy and proud to again drive change with this fuel cell hauler concept.
“While an early prototype, this innovation will give valuable insights into the opportunities of hydrogen in the energy transformation alongside battery-electric solutions.
“We believe that by exploring multiple technologies and working in partnership we can create the best path forward to decarbonise the construction industry.”
The testing comes as Volvo CE accelerates it work on sustainable power sources, in line with its Science Based Targets initiative (SCTi) commitment, to build a Net Zero value chain emission by 2040.
