Vinssen launches South Korea’s ‘first’ hydrogen fuel cell ship

The aluminium leisure vessel, measuring 17.4m weighs 32 tonnes, has a top speed of 20 knots, powered by two 100kW fuel cells and four 92kW lithium-ion batteries.

This hydrogen fuel-cell and battery-based propulsion system, designed for use in small vessels up to large passenger and merchant ships, has obtained certification from the Korea Maritime Safety Authority and the Korean Register.

The South Korea-based company held a launch ceremony for the ship at its headquarters in Yeongam, Jeollanam-do, having started construction in October 2024.

Vinssen says the vessel operates quietly without emitting nitrogen oxides, fine dust or carbon dioxide.

The firm’s CEO Chilhan Lee, has said the company will continue to contribute to the expansion of eco-friendly marine mobility, and “will continue to enhance performance and operability based on…real-world operations.”

The launch comes shortly after Vinssen entered into an exclusive partnership with ILDO F&C for the delivery of composite-based lightweight bipolar plates, which distribute hydrogen and oxygen, conduct electricity and manage heat and water by-products.

These plates were intended to deliver enhanced operability through hydrophilic/hydrophobic options, resistance to degradation, and weight reduction.

Last March, the firm also received an Approval in Principle for a hydrogen-powered tugboat from Korean Register.
