Balasubramanian “Balsu” Lakshamanan takes to the new role with experience from working on projects at Ohmium, where he was responsible for the development of a 100kW PEM electrolyser.

Additionally, he worked at General Motors leading the stack and system design for its Gen3 fuel cell system.

Having earned a doctorate in Chemical Engineering for the University of South Carolina, following his bachelor’s in Chemical and Electrochemical Engineering from the Central Electrochemical Research Institute in India, H2 View understands Lakshamanan is an inventor on more than 45 patents in the US.

“I am excited to lead the development of megawatt scale AEM electrolyser stacks at Versogen,” said Lakshamanan.“The transition to hydrogen energy in our society has been hampered by high production costs which inhibit demand. This issue has also held back investments required to create large-scale projects that will lower production costs. I look forward to commercialising our solution that can enable production of affordable green hydrogen at scale.”

In 2021, Versogen’s electrolyser technology was selected by the innovation only Shell GameChanger Accelerator, which by working in Partnership with the US Department of Energy’s National Renewable Laboratory (NREL), hopes to provide start-ups with access to financial resources, state-of-the-art facilities, and technical experts.

Commenting on Lakshamanan’s appointment, Yushan Yan, CEO and co-founder of Versogen, said, “Since Versogen’s founding, we have built a stellar reputation in the hydrogen industry as an AEM supplier, providing high-quality membranes at scale. With Balsu joining us, and our recent Series A financing, we are now also well-positioned to become a leader in producing larger AEM electrolyser stacks.”

The company revealed in May this year (2022), it had closed a Series A funding round, raising $14.5m which it said it will invest in the scale-up development of its electrolyser stacks.
