Under the new strategy, Turkey has set the goals of reducing the cost of green hydrogen production to below $2.4/kg by 2035 and $1.2/kg by 2053, and boosting installed electrolyser capacity to 2GW in 2035, 5GW in 2035, and 70GW in 2053.

Minister for Energy and Natural Resources, Fatih Dönmez said that green hydrogen will be an important tool as the country strives to reach Net Zero emissions, highlighting its potential to decarbonise hard-to-abate industries such as chemicals, steel, cement, and more.

“Turkey has great potential in terms of green hydrogen production,” said Dönmez. “Considering our geopolitical position, we have all the instruments that will make us a strong player in the global hydrogen market.”

In a bid to meet the domestic hydrogen production targets, the energy minister said the Government will create an incentive mechanism for the use of domestic components.

Additionally, he stated that the Turkish state will support research, development and production studies for the development of domestic and national technologies, stating, “We are working with the relevant ministries regarding incentives and support to be applied for hydrogen R&D and production.”

Dönmez also announced a new target to see hydrogen make up 12% of Turkey’s overall gas in 2053, with synthetic methane intended to make up 30%.

February 2022 saw plans for Turkey’s ‘first’ green hydrogen production plant announced.

Set to be developed by South Marmara Development Agency, Enerjisa Üretim Santralleri A.Ş., Eti Maden Operations General Directorate, TÜBİTAK MAM and ASPİLSAN Enerji A.Ş., it is hoped the plant could produce hydrogen to decarbonise national industries.
