Toyota to produce hydrogen fuel cell-powered Hilux in 2028

Toyota UK said the fuel cell Hilux will be a “further demonstration of its commitment to realising the potential of hydrogen.”

In its statement, Toyota said the launch of the fuel cell model will help drive the wider rollout of hydrogen ecosystems and infrastructure in Europe.

The fuel cell model is part of the firm’s new Hilux lineup, which expands its electrified range with both battery and hydrogen power.

Toyota said its ninth-generation Hilux will “meet the evolving needs of customers across global markets” via its range of powertrain options.

While hybrid and alternative technologies are prioritised, internal combustion engine versions will continue to be offered in Eastern European markets only, ensuring regional customer demands are met.

Last year, Toyota announced it would begin demonstrations for its hydrogen fuel cell-powered Hilux prototypes.

Up to 10 vehicles were built by Toyota Motor Manufacturing UK, five of which underwent field testing to assess safety, performance, functionality, and durability.

The other five prototypes were used in customer and media demonstrations, including the 2024 Paris Olympic and Paralympic Games.

The new lineup also builds on Toyota’s recently unveiled third-generation fuel cell system, which reportedly offers double the durability and greater fuel efficiency than its predecessor.
