Under a freshly inked collaboration agreement, the partners hope to further strengthen THMES’ reach in the zero-emission forklift truck segment by offering end-to-end solutions of fuel cell forklifts, green hydrogen production and refuelling infrastructure, provided by Fusion Fuel Spain and its industrial partners.

The companies plan to offer a fully financed solution that combines hydrogen-as-a-service, which they hope will guarantee security of supply at competitive prices.

H2 View understands the partners aim to deploy their green hydrogen logistics projects that combine the full spectrum of fuel cell-powered vehicles for supply chain, distribution, and material handling operations.

“We have spoken at length about the importance of value chain partnerships to develop the green hydrogen ecosystem and solve the chicken-and-egg problem that all too often hinders the commercial adoption of novel technology,” said Frederico Chaves, Co-Head of Fusion Fuel. “We are extremely excited about the potential of this partnership to help accelerate the deployment of Fusion Fuel’s technology and TMHES’ forklift solutions within the Spanish logistics and material handling market.”

Just last week (February 28), Fusion Fuel was awarded a €3.3m ($3.5m) grant by the Spanish H2 Pioneros programme to develop a 2.4MW green hydrogen project in the country.

Joan Catalan, Director General of Toyota Material Handling España, commented, “We are pleased to collaborate with Fusion Fuel Spain in the development of Hydrogen as a green energy for the mobility in our country.”

Catalan added, “Toyota has been working on hydrogen for many years, starting with the fuel cell forklift prototype presented in 2005, so this cooperation agreement is a further step to reinforce the actions already underway.”

Speaking at H2 View’s Mobility Snap Summit in November (2022), Karina Kocha, Business Intelligence Manager at gasworld told viewers that by 2030, material handling is likely to take up the majority of hydrogen demand for mobility in North America.

Kocha explained, “In the near-term hydrogen mobility in ports is likely to take a lead, because there is already the infrastructure built there.”

Material handling. Point proven.

Just as the final weeks of 2022 were playing out, news emerged from Pennsylvania-based PDC Machines that it had kicked-off operations at its onsite hydrogen refuelling system for forklift trucks at Mitsubishi Gas Chemical’s Niigata Plant in Japan.

The SimpleFuel™ refuelling system offers onsite hydrogen generation, storage, and dispensing, producing high purity fuel cell-grade green hydrogen, to power up to seven fuel cell forklifts at the Mitsubishi plant.

In many ways it felt like a story that was a long time in-the-making. Not only has Japan been a hydrogen market building out for some time now, but PDC Machines has long been establishing its own technologies and footprint in the hydrogen space, from compression technologies through to full refuelling and dispense…
