Located in Gorakhpur, the plant will produce green hydrogen for blending into compressed (CNG) and piped natural gas (PNG).
Though modest in scale, the plant will produce enough hydrogen to feed into Torrent Gas’ City Gas Distribution network in Gorakhpur, delivering a cleaner fuel mix to households, CNG stations, and local industries.
The project is backed by Uttar Pradesh’s Green Hydrogen Policy 2024 and represents the country’s largest hydrogen–natural gas blending initiative within a city gas distribution network.
The state has set a target of producing one million tonnes of green hydrogen annually by 2028 under its policy framework.
Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath described green hydrogen as “the energy of the future” and highlighted the project’s potential to reduce carbon emissions, protect biodiversity, and improve public health.
Adityanath added that the state’s abundant water resources could offer a competitive edge in scaling hydrogen production.
Additionally, the Gorakhpur facility aligns with India’s broader goal under the National Green Hydrogen Mission, which aims for five million tonnes of green hydrogen production per year by 2030, supporting decarbonisation across hard-to-abate sectors.
