Under a contract signed with CF Industries, Topsoe will license its SynCOR Ammonia™ to combine with carbon capture and storage (CCS) to enable the production of ammonia.

The SynCOR tech is expected to perform ammonia production and cost-efficient carbon capture, understood to be the preferred technology for mega-scale ammonia production due to its maturity and low capital and operating costs.

The “world’s largest” ammonia producer, CF Industries, will evaluate the project in collaboration with Mitsui & Co. If they decide to further advance the project, ammonia will be used as a decarbonised energy source.

“We believe low-carbon ammonia helps unlock the door towards a Net Zero future,” explained Henrik Rasmussen, Managing Director for the Americas and Topsoe.

“Our technology offers a cost-effective route to producing low-carbon ammonia while also enabling carbon capture, at industrial-proven scale.”

Last year (2023), the Appalachian Regional Clean Hydrogen Hub (ARCH2) announced Haldor Topsoe would provide its SynCOR technology for the ammonia production plant.

ExxonMobil also revealed its intentions to use the solution to produce hydrogen at a “mega-scale.” Its Texas facility is aiming to capture around seven million tonnes of CO2 annually using SynCOR paired with a Honeywell UOP carbon capture tech.

The facility is expected to begin operations between 2027 and 2028.
