Topsoe to supply 55MW SOEC for Spanish green hydrogen-based methanol plant

The Danish technology firm said the system would be used at Forestal del Atlántico’s Triskelion project in Galicia, which is expected to produce 57,000 tonnes of e-methanol per year.

The project secured a €49m ($57.1m) grant from the EU Innovation Fund and will combine green hydrogen with around 78,000 tonnes of captured carbon dioxide to produce the low-carbon chemical.

With a final investment decision due in Q2 2026, the deal will mark Topsoe’s first commercial deployment of its SOEC technology and includes a 10-year service warranty programme.

Forestal expects the project to be online by 2028 to supply e-methanol in the production of chemicals like glue and resins.

Topsoe has already been selected to provide its methanol synthesis technology, catalysts, and engineering for the project.

The firm claims by providing both technologies, the solution will improve overall efficiency by up to 30% compared to conventional electrolysis.

The electrolyser system will be manufactured at Topsoe’s 500MW factory in Herning, Denmark, which is due to come online within the next month.

Topsoe Chief Commercial Officer of Power-to-X, Sundus Ramli, said the project would show the decarbonisation potential of combining electrolysis and synthesis technologies.

Forestal General Manager, Andrés Fuentes, added, “This collaboration allows us to optimise operational efficiency, strengthening our ability to compete in the international renewable fuels market.”

It will also come as a key proof point for SOEC technology more broadly. Despite its potential, SOEC remains nascent, with no large-scale systems operating globally.
