The Norwegian company’s Innovation Centre in Narvik, Norway, will have an annual capacity of 120MW production in 2024 and increase to 400MW in 2025, being the ‘first’ Gigafactory in Europe for Proton Exchange Membrane (PEM) fuel cells.
Test-production of the fuel cell stacks will take place at thyssenkrupp headquarters in Bremen, Germany, with the equipment being validated and completed before shipment to Narvik.
Tore Enger, Group CEO of TECO 2030, said, “We are moving closer to zero emission energy generation, as we have signed a contract for the delivery of a complete fuel cell stack production line at our facility in Narvik.”
“Over the next year, the production line will be set up in Bremen, Germany and produce a limited amount of TECO 2030 PEM fuel cell stacks.”
Last week, TECO 2030 stated it has completed the production of its ‘first’ fuel cell stack, designed for heavy-duty and marine applications fuelled by hydrogen.
The system includes several hundred stack cells that provide a net output of 100kW, generating electricity from electrochemical reactions based on hydrogen.

Also announced earlier this year, TECO 2030 and AVL List GmbH collaborated to integrate its hydrogen fuel cell stacks into a AVL hydrogen DemoTruck prototype, which is set to be on the roads by mid-2030.

The German-based, steel production company thyssenkrupp revealed in August (2022) former German Government official, Dr. Stefan Kaufmann, will serve as an advisor to the company on all cross-business hydrogen activities and projects.
The former Innovation Commissioner for Green Hydrogen of the German Government will play a key role in thyssenkrupp’s hydrogen developments.
