The project, based in Germany, is funded by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) and is examining one of the most promising approaches to Power-to-X (PtX) technologies.

These innovative solutions convert renewable electricity into other forms of energy, such as green hydrogen or renewable fuels.

Sunfire’s high-temperature co-electrolysis plant is an important part of the research project that is now in its second funding phase, and the company has recently announced the plants Factory Acceptance Test (FAT) has been successfully completed.

Sunfire can now put its new generation of co-electrolysis into operation for the first time. The unique feature of the technology is the efficient process, in which synthesis gas (a mixture of hydrogen and carbon monoxide) is produced in one step using renewable electricity from water stream and carbon dioxide (CO2).

The process takes place at operating temperatures of up to 850°C.

As a next step, Sunfire will deliver the electrolyser to the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT), where it will be integrated into a power-to-liquid plant at the Energy Lab 2.0, with the aim of producing around 200 litres of synthetic fuels per day.

Last year, Sunfire announced it would provide an electrolyser for a 20MW green hydrogen production project in Finland.

Being developed by P2X solutions, the green hydrogen produced will enrich Finland’s hydrogen economy and support the wider integration of the clean energy carrier into multiple sectors and industries.

The plant will be developed in Harjavalta and install an alkaline electrolyser which is scheduled for delivery this year, before the plant is put into commercial operation in 2024.
