Sunfire awarded FEED contract for P2X’s 40MW hydrogen-based methanol plant

The German OEM will carry out a front-end engineering design (FEED) study for the project in Joensuu, Finland, which could see its pressurised alkaline electrolysers installed.

The electrolysis plant would supply hydrogen for e-methanol production, which could be used for shipping and aviation applications.

It follows the launch of P2X Solutions’ first plant – a 20MW e-methane project in Harjavalta – which is equipped with Sunfire’s technology.

P2X Solutions CEO Herkko Plit, said the FEED contract was an “important milestone” towards taking final investment decision (FID) on the Joensuu plant, which would triple the company’s green hydrogen production.

The project would serve as another stepping stone in the firm’s plans to develop over 1GW of hydrogen production.

Beyond Joensuu, the company is also looking to build a 100MW plant in Oulu, which would include e-fuel production, heat recovery and oxygen offtake. P2X Solutions originally expected to take FID this autumn.
