The Canadian clean energy firm announced the acquisition today (October 15), stating that its approach will be “simpler, cleaner, more reliable, and more resilient” than Recyclage Carbone Varennes’ (RCV) original biomass gasification process.
The Québec project is expected to produce around 72,000 tonnes per year, and is scheduled to begin operations in 2028. It will also capture over 100,000 tonnes of CO2 annually.
The acquisition follows a court-approved process involving RCV. StormFisher will repurpose the site into North America’s “first” large-scale low-carbon methanol facility.
“We have long wanted to establish ourselves in Québec, and we are delighted to have found the right opportunity with this project,” explained Judson Whiteside, StormFisher Hydrogen CEO.
“We want to be a trusted and valued neighbour in Varennes. We are committed to listening, collaborating, and ensuring this project delivers lasting benefits.”
Additionally, the firm aims to achieve renewable fuels on non-biological origin (RFNBO) status under EU rules, with an eye on exports to global maritime, aviation, and chemical markets.
If its hydrogen-based methanol meets RFNBO standards and its clean hydrogen is renewable certified, the project could be eligible to bid under the German-Canadian H2Global tender.
In July, the German government launched a market consultation on a planned €400m ($424m) bilateral green hydrogen tender with Canada.
