‘Stop starting with megaprojects’: EIC urges Africa to prioritise realistic hydrogen offtake

Africa should stop jumping straight into mega-scale green hydrogen projects and instead focus on lining up realistic offtake and building local infrastructure and supply chains first.

That is the conclusion of the Energy Industries Council’s (EIC) latest report, which found that despite 38GW of planned clean hydrogen production capacity, Africa has just 17MW in operation.

The trade body found 78 green hydrogen projects – representing $194bn of capital costs – were proposed across the continent, led by developments in Egypt, Morocco, and South Africa, which account for around 80% of the region’s planned capital spending.
