Stargate Hydrogen agrees to explore electrolyser production in Saudi Arabia

The Memorandum of Understanding (MOU), signed with the Research, Development, and Innovation Authority (RDI) of Saudi Arabia, will be part of Stargate’s plans to establish a regional headquarters in Riyadh.

Stargate will likely need to adapt its electrolyser designs to local supply chains and standards in Saudi Arabia. The firm has secured partnerships with Saudi academic institutions, such as Kaust, to generate local IP.

RDI and the Ministry of Investment have set up a programme to lure global tech start-ups into local manufacturing in the Middle East.

Apex Ventures facilitated Stargate’s entry under this programme.

“Saudi Arabia offers a unique and globally competitive environment to scale transformative technologies,” explained Marko Virkebau, Stargate’s CEO.

“Through this partnership with RDI, Stargate will drive IP generation, support local talent, and contribute to the Kingdom’s ambition of becoming a global leader in clean energy.”

Stargate Hydrogen has been building up its electrolyser capacity over the past year.

In June, the company opened its factory in Estonia with a full 2025 order book. The facility is capable of delivering 140MW of systems per year, although this could be expanded to over 1GW with additional investments.
