Under a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU), the two companies will undertake a feasibility study for Algerian-produced hydrogen using renewable energy sources.
H2 View understands that the green hydrogen produced will be used for manufacturing green steel at Tosyali’s Iron Steel Industry Algeria SPA complex.
The MOU is expected to align with Algeria’s national hydrogen strategy, which aims to reduce national gas consumption and decrease greenhouse gas emissions.
In 2023, Algeria’s national hydrogen roadmap revealed that the country aims to supply Europe with 10% of its clean hydrogen demands by 2040. A pipeline connected to Italy may enable the transportation of green and blue hydrogen.
Agreed at the headquarters of Sonatrach’s General Directorate, the MOU was signed off by the company’s President and CEO, Rachid Hachichi, and the Chairman of the Board of Directors of Tosyali Iron Steel Industrial Algeria SPA, Fuat Tosyali.
In 2023, Sonatrach announced it would develop renewable energy capacity, green hydrogen projects and carbon capture and storage projects in Algeria, as part of an agreement with Italian oil company Eni.
