The project is set to utilise solar and wind energy resources in the Erdos region to produce green hydrogen, as well as up to 240,000 tonnes of green oxygen per year, which is expected to be used for the carbon reduction initiatives of the adjacent ZTHC Energy coal processing pilot project.

Said to be the ‘world’s largest’ project in the green hydrogen coal-chemical field, Sinopec hopes it will expand China’s and global green hydrogen production capacity and promote the development of the green hydrogen supply chain, while advancing China’s renewable energy goals.

H2 View understands the installed power generating capacity of wind and solar will reach 450MW and 270MW respectively, facilitating hydrogen production by water electrolysis.

Additionally scope of the project covers hydrogen storage and transport. The Chinese company says the site will boast hydrogen storage capacity of up to 288,000 cubic metres.

Seeing an investment of ¥5.7bn ($828.04m), the project is estimated to cut 1.43 million tonnes of carbon emissions annually and contribute ¥600m ($87.17m) in GDP and  ¥30m ($4.36m) in tax.

“The project is of great significance to guaranteeing China’s energy security, building new energy systems, and advancing green energy and low-carbon development in Inner Mongolia, leading towards a new, high-quality development roadmap that prioritises ecological conservation and green development,” said Ma Yongsheng, Chairman of Sinopec.

A 2022 report by RMI said that industries and regions in China have the potential to install 100GW of renewable hydrogen capacity by 2030, saying the country’s 2060 Net Zero roadmap highlights green hydrogen as one of the most significant solutions for heavy industry and heavy-duty transport in the energy transition.

Sinopec has said it will continue to advance the hydrogen energy industry chain development in China with the R&D of innovative technologies, a forward-looking roadmap, and comprehensive industry layout.

Just last week (February 16) Sinopec launched its first integrated methanol-to-hydrogen and hydrogen refuelling station in Dalian, China.
