SIAD and Brembo invest €2m in advanced hydrogen tech start-up Hydrospark

Hydrospark has developed a platform that uses ceramic materials to produce solid oxide electrolyser cells (SOECs) with higher energy density and reduced manufacturing costs.

According to the company, these cells produce electricity and heat from hydrogen with high efficiency and zero emissions. They can also convert renewable energy into hydrogen.

“This investment will allow us to validate our technology in an actual production facility, while seizing the opportunity to grow and position ourselves as a leading player in the hydrogen market,” said Fabrizio Gualandris, CEO of Hydrospark.

Using this funding, it aims to break even and achieve an annual production capacity of one million cells by its second year of operations.

Bernardo Sestini, Chairman and CEO of the SIAD Group, says its investment is “fully aligned” with SIAD’s long-term vision.

“Hydrogen is a key enabler for a decarbonised future, and Hydrospark brings together industrial expertise and technology vision,” he said.

This kind of technology could matter for a brake systems company like Brembo. SOEC units can supply high-efficiency electricity and useful heat, or make green hydrogen on site, decarbonising production plants.

It could also expose Brembo to new ceramic processing methods. The company works with advanced carbon-ceramic discs so research could spill over into lighter, more heat-tolerance friction components or caliper coatings.

“Our investment reflects a commitment to fostering the growth of dynamic entrepreneurial talent and advancing solutions,” said Matteo Tirabochi, Executive Chairman of Brembo Group.
