Amidst the multitude of policy announcements there be for hydroelectricity as an energy source in and perceived swings in momentum from one regional hydrogen market to another, there can be no doubt that whatever the region, the entire ecosystem for green hydrogen requires alignment. From the currently wasted capacities in wind and solar power, to the requirements in water resource and availability; from the infrastructure build-out to the value chain approach that will be fundamental to a successful roll-out.

If the emphasis is increasingly on collaboration, final investment decisions (FIDs) and arguably a greater pragmatism in hydrogen’s build-out as this sector begins to mature, then a wide range of challenges and opportunities are still be explored – opportunities in how we source and produce hydrogen, and perhaps not always from commonly considered routes.

Against this backdrop and together with sponsor BC Hydro, H2 View will this April (2023) be staging its latest Snap Summit, titled Renewables & Ecosystem. Held on April 24, this will be a half-day digital event exploring the ecosystem for green hydrogen, the opportunities waiting to be leveraged, and what it will take to make green hydrogen happen. Questions to be addressed include:

What needs to happen with renewables, capacities and energy storage?
How can we succeed in grid balancing?
How are ammonia markets developing and are we geared up for ammonia’s future role with green hydrogen?
What does a successful value chain approach look like?
And what are the applications or directions of travel that we should focus on?

Crucially, however, the event will look into areas that do not currently seem to get the ‘airtime’ they perhaps merit, in terms of hydrogen produced and what existing strengths we could be leveraging. For example, one question out there is – what role could there be for hydroelectricity as an energy source in green hydrogen generation?

This is where event partner BC Hydro will offer particular knowledge and expertise. British Columbia (BC) is a province on Canada’s west coast that’s helping to lead the energy transition away from fossil fuels. Clean fuel producers are gravitating towards the province to take advantage of the myriad of benefits that BC and BC Hydro, the region’s electric utility, have to offer.

Hydroelectricity is a predictable and consistent source of power, independent of weather and seasonality. BC Hydro’s integrated grid transmits 98% clean, renewable hydroelectricity that can be used to produce low-carbon intensity hydrogen, and the company will be on-hand at the Snap Summit to talk about all of these benefits and opportunities, and much more besides.

Agenda

A multi-faceted agenda will be divided into three sessions. Session 1 will discuss The Power of Renewables, getting into topics such as how to best utilise both the wind and solar power potential as well as that aforementioned opportunity in harnessing hydropower’s potential.

Session 2 will then begin to home in on The Green Hydrogen Ecosystem, with topics ranging from platinum group metals and critical resources to the water system debate and fuel cells co-development and industrialisation.

The third and final session, titled Realising a Successful Hydrogen Ecosystem, will take this one step further and seek to crystallise the discussion around the value chain and what needs to happen next – from integrating solar-to-hydrogen through to the climate for collaboration and investment.
