Signed with SEAM, the Norwegian zero-emission maritime firm will be responsible for the delivery of propulsion, control, and safety systems, with the PowerCell’s products expected to be delivered in the fourth quarter of 2024.

H2 View understands PowerCell will supply its Marine System 200, enabling the ferries to produce approximately 12MW of power. Fuelled by green hydrogen, the companies say the systems could cut carbon dioxide emissions by 26,500 tonnes per year.

Last month (February 2023), PowerCell revealed it had signed a Letter of Intent (LoI) to negotiate the final terms concerning a marine hydrogen fuel cell project in Norway.

Norwegian transport group Torghatten Nord will deliver the ferries, each boasting a capacity for 599 passengers, 120 cars, and 12 trucks each.

Set to operate on the Vestfjorden at Lofoten, the solution is hoped to meet Norwegian Government requirements for all ferries to be emission-free, with any travelling for up to four hours to be powered by hydrogen.

“This is a ground-breaking project for the entire marine industry that we are very happy to be part of,” said Richard Berkling, CEO of PowerCell. “Norway led the development in the introduction of LNG in the marine industry and now they are taking an important step to establish green hydrogen as the energy source to decarbonise marine commercial operations.”

In November (2022), Ballard’s fuel cells were successfully installed onboard Norled’s MF Hydra liquid hydrogen-powered ferry, set to operate on the triangular route between Hjelmeland-Skipavik-Nesvik in Norway.

Gunvald Mortvedt, CEO of SEAM, commented, “we are very pleased to have PowerCell onboard. Our collaboration with PowerCell is a strategically important and long-term partnership. We have great confidence in their solutions and are looking forward to working with them on both current and future projects.”

PowerCell has said around €5m ($5.3m) of the order value is expected to impact its 2023 revenues.

A Successful Ecosystem for Green Hydrogen – London

It is becoming ever clearer that the entire green hydrogen ecosystem requires alignment. Hydrogen’s potential, performance, and safety are proven. Green hydrogen is widely accepted as a core pathway to Net Zero, yet the key levers in the transition are not yet in-sync.

At H2 View we recognise the increasingly challenging economic climate that various countries/economies are currently facing. We want to help as many companies as possible in the hydrogen space to achieve their needs as competitively and logically as possible. As a result, we felt it was a compelling decision to relocate our previously planned event in Iceland, to a venue in London.

Join H2 View in London, one of the foremost investment capitals of the world, for a 1.5-day event devoted to thought leadership, insights, and actionable takeaways in the green hydrogen ecosystem, combined with the connections and networking to deliver against those objectives.

This H2 View hydrogen summit is dedicated to dissecting the ecosystem requirements to truly realise a green hydrogen-fuelled future across industries, transport, and society. This event will tackle all sides of the energy ecosystem, from wind and solar power requirements to additionality, water sustainability, electrolyser technologies, and investment and policy climate.
