Port of Alicante tenders for 1MW hydrogen plant

A constructor and operator of the facility will be chosen, dependent upon a basic project plan and financial viability report submitted by interested players.

Dubbed Portali-H2, the project is expected to source at least 70% of its energy from renewables, “moving towards maximum energy autonomy.” The hydrogen produced will be used in port operations, local maritime, and land transport.

The port has reserved 500m² for the plant and 3,000m² of space for renewable electricity generation to power the electrolyser, the timeline of which will depend on final tender decisions.

The Port Authority says the plant aims not only to reduce emissions but also to unlock investment, generate knowledge, and position the port as a benchmark for sustainability in the Mediterranean.

It says the system must deliver high safety standards, environmental capacity, and a design with minimal visual impact.

The announcement comes within days of the Swedish Port of Gothenburg revealing its own plans to commence a 10MW plant for 2029 completion.
