Set to be installed at Uniper’s Maasvlakte Energy Hub, the 100MW of Plug technology will make up the first instalment of up to 500MW of electrolysis capacity, which is hoped to be achieved by 2030 at the latest.

Under the agreement, H2 View understands Plug will deliver 10 prefabricated PEM electrolyser array’s to Uniper’s flagship hydrogen project, dubbed H2Maassvlakte, upon the company’s positive final investment decision (FID).

The project was nominated for the European Commission’s Important Projects of Common European Interest (IPCEI) Hy2Use programme, which had approved €5.2bn of public support for hydrogen value chain projects in 13 EU member states.

“The H2Massvlakte project marks a significant milestone for Europe’s transition to more sustainable, localised energy in response to geopolitical risk and climate change,” said Andy Marsh, CEO of Plug Power.

“Plug is fully committed to a green hydrogen future and our electrolyser technology has a proven track record of helping customers produce green hydrogen at scale. Our partnership with Uniper validates Plug’s investment in strengthening our EU presence to bring much-needed energy security to the European Market,” Marsh added.

Plug’s electrolysis technology designs make up part of the project’s front-end engineering design (FEED) study, which is currently being performed by Uniper with Technip Energies.

Axel Wietfeld, CEO of Uniper Hydrogen, commented,” Uniper is striving for a carbon-neutral portfolio by 2035. Our flagship H2Maasvlakte contributes significantly to this. I am pleased that we have found a partner in Plug Power with whom we can realise this ambition at a rapid pace.”
