Announced today (June 15), the signed Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the French companies looks to develop offshore hydrogen production platforms, with a minimum capacity of 100MW.

H2 View understands the production platforms are intended to be powered by on or off-grid offshore windfarms. Chantiers de l’Atlantique are due to design, build, and install the platforms, while Lhyfe will design and operate the hydrogen production technology.

The platforms are planned to be installed on existing fixed structures, mounted on the seabed, or on floating platforms, will hope to serve the renewable hydrogen fuel chain at sea, as well as in ports.

The agreement comes as the companies prepare to launch the SEM-REV project in September 2022, which hopes to demonstrate the potential offshore hydrogen production, off the cost of Saint-Nazaire, France.

Thomas Créach, Technical Director at Lhyfe, said, “We are delighted to take this new step forward with Chantiers de l’Atlantique.

“Thanks to the complementarity and solidity of our expertise, and based on our previous achievements, we are now in a position to respond to the various calls for tenders related to offshore. The production of renewable green hydrogen on a very large scale is now within reach.”

In May this year (2022), Lhyfe announced it was aiming to launch an integrated floating wind turbine hydrogen production system, with the Dutch-based Strohm.

Frédéric Grizaud, Director of the Marine Energy and Engineering Business Unit (AOE), at Chantiers de l’Atlantique, said, “The signing of this agreement is the concrete materialisation of a successful collaboration between two companies with a desire to play a full role in energy transition. We are now in a position in France to offer green hydrogen production solutions for the international market.”
