Azane Fuel Solutions is developing the bunkering technology for ammonia terminals designed for high-capacity, fast refuelling of ships, with planned facilities able to transfer more than 100 tonnes of refrigerated ammonia per hour
From 2029, the stations are expected to be operational and open to both Norwegian and international shipping.
The three stations will be delivered in parallel with new vessels, for which Enova has committed more than NOK 1bn ($99m) in support of seven zero-emission vessels.
This includes three ammonia-fuelled bulk carriers developed by Amon Bulk and four hydrogen-powered ships led by GMI Rederi and LH2 Shipping.
In total, the agency expects the seven vessels to deliver emissions reductions of 92,000 tonnes of CO2 every single year.
Børge Noddeland, Programme Manager for Ammonia Bunkering Facilities at Enova, said shipowners are more willing to invest in ammonia-fuelled vessels once they know the refuelling infrastructure exists.
By committing to build bunkering stations in key locations, Envoa will reduce the risk for vessel owners, Noddeland said, while making investment decisions easier and accelerating the shift to zero-emission shipping.
The west coast locations sit at the heart of Norway’s offshore and coastal shipping activity, maximising early demand for ammonia bunkering.
