The two companies will combine sales of Nikola hydrogen trucks with services and hydrogen fuelling infrastructure solutions, offering customers what the partnership has called a ‘first-of-its-kind integrated mobility solution’.

By 2027, it is hoped enough hydrogen would have been supplied to power up to 5,000 Nikola Tre FCEVs in Europe.

Deployment of these vehicles could cut around 560,000 metric tonnes of CO2 by 2027.

The joint venture will cover the whole value chain of the hydrogen industry, from the supply of green hydrogen to the establishment of a demand driven fuelling infrastructure, to the provision of FCEV’s.

Patrick Lammers, Chief Operating Officer of Customer Solutions at E.ON SE, said, “Our customers want affordable, integrated and, most important, green mobility solutions.

“As early as 2027, we could potentially replace over 200 million litres of diesel with hydrogen and significantly reduce CO2 emissions – and this is just the beginning.”

Earlier this year, Nikola Corporation launched the European Nikola Tre BEV and FCEV Beta Version at IAA transportation in partnership with IVECO.

The Nikola Tre FCEV Beta is expected to launch in the second half of 2023 in North America and the first half of 2024 in Europe.

Michael Lohscheller, President and CEO of Nikola Corporation, commented, “To ensure the hydrogen infrastructure is in place to support our customers, we are working with our partner E.ON on cost-efficient and sustainable road transport solutions.

“Significant interest in our bundled lease program consisting of the Nikola Tre FCEV, hydrogen fuel and maintenance is a game changer for the industry and is an added benefit as it simplifies and lowers the total cost of ownership for fleet and truck owners.”
