H2 View understands the company made a request for information (RFI) in May (2022) to locate sources of the cleaner gases to be used as part of its plans to deliver a 100% fossil-free gas networks for customers who do not want to electrify their homes.

According to National Grid, the RFI revealed that at least 33 trillion BTUs will be available over the next three years, which is more than double of the amount needed in 2025.

The firm has determined that the fossil fuel energy supplies are either available immediately or could be online withing two years of contracting the projects.

In line meeting its fossil-free gas network ambitions, the company has said that both hydrogen and RNG are key to achieving a Net Zero future.

James Holodak, Vice-President of Energy Procurement at National Grid, said, “The RFI response alone is nearly double our 2025 need for fossil-free fuel and our analysis indicates that this initial response is not nearly the extent of RNG, hydrogen, and other innovative renewable resources that National Grid can procure.

“These results are an important proof-point that, with the right policy and regulatory support, within two years of contracting these projects, National Grid would be able to deliver an affordable and reliable clean energy transition for our customers.”
