Located in Száhalombatta near Budapest, Hungary, the 10MW plant will be capable of producing 1,600 tonnes of green hydrogen per year.

Using Plug Power electrolyers, MOL will partially replace the existing natural gas usage at the Danube Refinery and reduce its fuel emissions by 25,000 tonnes. Hydrogen generators have also been provided by Plug to optimise the production of pure hydrogen.

“Today, our new green hydrogen plant is only making MOL’s industrial operations greener, but tomorrow it will offer solutions for the whole industry and hydrogen mobility,” explained József Molnár, CEO of MOL Group.

MOL and Plug first agreed to develop the green hydrogen facility in Hungary in 2022, with the project originally scheduled to begin producing last year (2023), however it was delayed.

Plug’s CEO, Andy Marsh said, “Together, we are advancing towards carbon neutrality fostering greener operations, and propelling the hydrogen economy forward.”

Elsewhere in Europe, construction has begun on Lhyfe’s 10MW green hydrogen plant in Germany, which is expected to produce four tonnes per day of hydrogen and be commissioned in the second half of this year.

Plans for one of the largest hydrogen production facilities in the UK were dropped by SSE Renewables and Equinor earlier this year. Powered by the 3.6GW offshore wind farm at Dogger Bank D, it was set to generate up to 2GW of renewable power.
