Under a €7.1m ($8.6m) contract, Metacon will act as the prime integrator for the project, providing the packaged system, auxiliary equipment, and managing delivery to the customer.
The deal marks Metacon’s first hydrogen contract in Romania, extending its footprint beyond Sweden, Greece and other EU projects. Last month, it supplied 20MW of electrolyser stacks for Motor Oil Hellas’ 50MW project.
“This is another proof of trust in Metacon’s ability to provide proven and cost-effective hydrogen production solutions for customers in different places and with varying requirements,” explained Christer Wikner, Metacon President and CEO.
The technology firm is using its partnership with Peric Hydrogen Technology to deliver large-scale, cost-competitive alkaline electrolysers projects in Europe, while preparing to scale its own European manufacturing capacity.
Metacon recently expanded its OEM license and manufacturing agreement by an extra three years with Peric. Under the agreement, Metacon will produce Chinese-designed electrolyser stacks in its Swedish gigafactory.
Although no start-up date has been set for the Elektra Power project, it is unlikely to be Romania’s first green hydrogen plant.
Last February, plans were announced for a 2.5MW facility in Cluj-Napoca, designed to produce one tonne of hydrogen per day and scheduled to come online between late 2026 and 2027.
