LBS Bina Group Berhad (LBS) revealed it had signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with investment body Invest Sabah Berhad, Sabah Forestry Development Authority (SAFODA) and electrical contractor Midwest Green to explore the project.
The consortium will look to use solar and wind energy to power 10GW of electrolyser to generate over 250,000 tonnes of green hydrogen per year.
Planned for construction in Kota Marudu, Sabah, the partners say the site is positioned in an area boasting some of the highest solar irradiance levels in Malaysia, as well as consistent high wind speeds.
Additionally, located near seaports, they say it will facilitate “efficient export logistics.”
Now, the companies will conduct land surveys, and site inspections to identify optimal locations, as well as align with local and international stakeholders.
“With the immense renewable energy potential of Kota Marudu, we see this as a landmark project that will drive economic growth for Saba and create lasting job opportunities for local communities,” said Dr. Lim Hock San, LBS Executive Chairman.
Malaysia has become the focus of an increasing number of green hydrogen production hopefuls looking to build projects.
With abundant renewable resources, it could be a key local exporter of hydrogen to other nations in Southeast Asia.
