However, the Chinese company has not revealed the order’s capacity, customer, or project, only stating that the electrolyser and balance of plant (BoP) will go to a ‘landmark hydrogen project’ in Namibia.
For the BoP, Longi is expected to also supply the gas purification, cooling, power supply, and water treatment requirements. It will also help design and implement the equipment on-site.
H2 View understands that the green hydrogen produced will be used for multiple end-use sectors, including heavy road transport, rail, off-road machinery, off-grid power generation, and maritime applications.
“The solution combines international standards with advanced technologies,” Longi said in a statement.
“The equipment will comply with CE marking requirements, together with international safety and regulatory requirements and lay a solid foundation for reliable long-term operation.”
President Jun Ma said the deal marks another breakthrough in Africa, after the company delivered a 10MW project in North Africa, bringing its signed project footprint to 10 countries.
“Looking ahead, we will continue to leverage our technology, experience, and delivery capabilities to provide reliable products and solutions for customers worldwide, driving the hydrogen industry toward scale-up and commercialisation,” Ma added.
Several large-scale projects are being planned in Namibia. The southern African nation has been slated as a key potential green hydrogen exporter thanks to its potential low-cost renewables.
In June, Hyphen Hydrogen awarded a front-end engineering and design (FEED) and engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) contract for its 3GW green ammonia project.
Longi Hydrogen global electrolysis plans after Chinese learning curves
Longi’s entry into the hydrogen space has been marked by speed and scale. Having started research in the field in 2018, the solar PV giant made its move in 2020, as China set its 2030 carbon-peaking target and hydrogen began to emerge as a cornerstone of future clean energy strategies.
By 2021, it had launched Longi Hydrogen Technology Co. Ltd, opened an electrolyser manufacturing plant in Wuxi, and unveiled its first pressurised 1,000Nm3/h alkaline system.
Its pace has not slowed. Zhang Haimeng, Longi’s Chief Strategy and ESG Officer, told H2 View the company has around 300MW of installed, operational hydrogen production capacity globally, with an order backlog of 200MW. It also has around 2.5GW of manufacturing capacity.
“In 2022, we started to win projects in China – some of the earlier large-scale projects,” he said. “We’re one of the first companies to enter this field at scale and provide products that can support large-scale green hydrogen production…
