Along with Amazon, Air Products, Holcim and Wiedmann & Winz, INEOS will test Daimler’s alternative vehicle as they run their first customer trial fleet of Mercedes-Benz GenH2 trucks in Germany.

The trial will begin in mid-2024 and take place for a year, with INEOS’ logistics partner VERVAEKE managing the transport to a pilot group of customers. The two companies will test the liquid hydrogen truck under real-life conditions.

The Mercedes-Benz GenH2 trucks are expected to boast a range of over 1,000km whilst being capable of carrying up to 25 tonnes of PVC products. H2 view understands they will incorporate two 44kg liquid hydrogen tanks to fuel two 145kW fuel cells.

Wouter Bleukx, Business Director Hydrogen at INEOS, claimed the company is the “leading producer of vinyls,” making thousands of deliveries per month. “We are committed to reducing our CO2 emissions and hydrogen fuel cell trucks can play a significant role in helping us achieve this,” explained Bleukx.

“It also provides an opportunity for customers to reduce their own carbon footprint and be one of the first to benefit from this exciting new technology. As both a user and producer of hydrogen, INEOS is in a unique position to support this transition.”

The company is one of the largest electrolysis technology operators and produces 60,000 tonnes of low-carbon hydrogen per year across multiple sites. Last year (2023), it received a new ISCC certification, making it the first European company to have its renewable hydrogen fully audited with greenhouse gas data certification.

In January (2024), Daimler Truck and Masdar announced they would explore the feasibility of liquid green hydrogen exports from the UAE to Europe.

Daimler Truck wants to explore the feasibility of importing liquid hydrogen into Europe by 2030 and therefore decarbonise its operations and the transport industry.
