Hero Future Energies, bp, Welspun Corp, Tubacex, Climate Policy Initiative and Climate Group will work closely with the Government of India on the development of the hydrogen economy and supply chain in India.

The Alliance was formed in April 2021, and it wants to attract global climate finance for the development of a large-scale hydrogen hub in India, to support the country’s goals of achieving Net Zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2070.

Jillian Evanko, President and CEO of Chart Industries and Founding Member of the IH2A, commented, “This is a strong commitment from global and Indian stakeholders to help develop the hydrogen economy in India.

“We look forward to working together with industry, Government of India and the state governments to help commercialise hydrogen and build India’s Net Zero pathway.”

Earlier this year, the coalition revealed its $360m 25/25 National Green Hydrogen Hub Development Plan, which has aims to create 25 national green hydrogen projects and five national hydrogen hubs by 2025.

The finance support of $360m means the IH2A can plan for the green hydrogen hubs and projects to be scalable so they can grow to gigawatt-scale within three years.

More recently, the Government of Kerala and IH2A jointly evaluated a proposal for building the Kochi Green Hydrogen (KGH2) Hub which has multiple use cases and is one of the 25/25 hubs planned in June.

The proposal states a potential capital expenditure of $575m to build a 60-tonne per day green hydrogen plant, with a 150MW electrolyser, storage and infrastructure, which could achieve gigawatt-scale.

The expansion of IH2A takes its membership base to 15, including seven industry members and eight partner organisations.

New members Hero Future Energies and bp will join Chart Industries, Reliance Industries Limited (RIL) and JSW Group in the IH2A Steering group, which is supported by the IH2A Secretariat ran by consulting firm FTI Consulting.

Srivatsan Iyer, Global Chief Executive Officer of Hero Future Energies, said “Getting green hydrogen commercialisation right is an important step in the national plans for Net Zero.”
