Hysata will receive up to AU$8.98m from the Australian Energy Agency (ARENA) and €5.9m from Germany’s Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF).

The programme, led by ARENA, will support pilot, trial and demonstration projects along the hydrogen supply chain and spur collaboration between Australian and German partners.

Australia and Germany have strengthened their hydrogen partnership, announcing another three joint projects.

Paul Barrett, Hysata CEO, claimed he is ‘proud’ to have the backing of the Australian and German governments as the company scales up its electrolyser.

He said, “Hysata’s capillary fed electrolyser operates at 95% system efficiency (41.5 kWh/kg), delivering a giant leap in performance and cost over incumbent technologies, which typically operate at 75% or less.”

Hysata state its electrolysis cell can produce green hydrogen from water at 98% cell energy efficiency which, according to the company, is well above IRENA’s 2050 target.

The company claims its technology could enable hydrogen production of below $1.50 per kg by the mid 2020s, making hydrogen commercially available and supports Australia’s ambitions of reducing the cost of green hydrogen to support its wider adoption.

Barrett added that Hysata’s electrolyser will help to decarbonise the hardest-to-abate sectors such as steelmaking, chemical production and heavy transport.

He said, “This funding will support our ability to tap into the German engineering expertise to help us design our factory of the future.”

Last year, Hysata received backing from global investors to grow its team and develop a pilot manufacturing facility for its electrolysers.

The funding was led by Vurescent Ventures on behalf of the Clean Energy Finance Corporation (AUS) and saw participation from Kiko Ventures (UK), IP Group Australia, Vestas Ventures (Denmark), Hotplus (AUS) and BlueScope (AUS).
